Iowa State Basketball Prepares For NCAA Tournament Showdown

With dedicated practice and rising stars, the Cyclones aim for Sweet 16 in Milwauke

In a season filled with high stakes and expectations, Iowa State’s basketball team has kept its eyes firmly set on achieving back-to-back Sweet 16 appearances. With their NCAA Tournament run now underway, the Cyclones are geared up for a crucial match against Ole Miss at the Fiserv Center on Sunday, March 23, 2025, at 6:45 p.m. This matchup showcases not only the team's determination but also includes the emergence of key players who have committed themselves to take their game to the next level.

Milan Momcilovic and Cade Kelderman, both sophomore players, have taken vital steps to enhance their skills, recently dedicating themselves to extra shooting sessions at the Sukup Basketball Complex. The duo initially sought to fill their free time during the quiet summer months of 2023, as Ames, Iowa, slowed down significantly when classes were out and fellow students were away from campus. Kelderman, noting the lack of activities in the area, shared that, “We’re done with our days schedule-wise by five. It can be a long time from then until you go to bed.”

What began as an opportunity to combat boredom has since transformed into a disciplined routine for the two athletes. Kelderman expressed that their efforts to separate themselves from other players by putting in extra work have become a crucial part of their daily lives. “It’s something we started last year just as a way to get some more shots up,” he remarked. “It’s nothing crazy, but just getting extra work in.” This mantra seems to have helped both players see tangible improvements in their careers.

Momcilovic has notably emerged as a significant player for the Cyclones. Standing at 6-foot-8, he's developed into one of the premier shooters in college basketball, boasting a remarkable 41.1 percent success rate from beyond the arc during the current 2024-2025 season, the best among any player taller than 6-foot-5 in the Big 12. Kelderman, who joined Iowa State as a walk-on from Waukee, is equally appreciative of the competitive edge that these extra sessions provide. He acknowledged, “It’s a big part of my routine... because I’m slower, I’m not as athletic, so I’ve got to take my skill as an advantage and be that much better.”

The rigorous practice sessions not only served to elevate their game but also created lasting friendships forged through their shared commitment to improvement. “Just that little bit extra work every day, it adds up over time,” said Kelderman, reflecting on how their dedication has deepened their bond. This mutual respect and motivation undoubtedly translate on the court as they prepare to face Ole Miss, a formidable competitor.

In the wake of these players’ commitment, Iowa State is also looking to adapt amidst challenges on the roster. Keshon Gilbert, the starting point guard, has been sidelined for the remainder of the season due to a groin injury. This unexpected development has thrust Kelderman into the rotation during a critical moment in the tournament. Kelderman made a statement in Iowa State's first-round victory over Lipscomb, contributing five points, one three-pointer, three steals, and three assists in 18 minutes of play. “I’ve seen him work every day,” said Momcilovic, praising his teammate's potential to step up when needed. “Everyone knows he can play out there, but he’s playing really well right now.”

On another front, Diante Garrett, a former Iowa State star and now an assistant coach, has made a seamless transition back into the program. Since joining head coach T.J. Otzelberger’s staff on December 26, 2024, Garrett has been instrumental in helping the Cyclones refine their skills and strategy. “That’s what T.J.’s expecting of me, to come out there and give my experience,” Garrett expressed. Although he never had the chance to participate in the NCAA Tournament during his playing days, he relishes the opportunity to inspire and elevate his players in meaningful ways. “Our guys have an inherent respect for him,” Otzelberger noted. “He brings that out of everybody, really.”

The Cyclones’ upcoming showdown against Ole Miss marks an important milestone for the team. With both the talent of players like Momcilovic and the leadership provided by Garrett, Iowa State is not only aiming for a victory but also eyeing long-term successes as they strive for excellence in the NCAA tournament. The determination of the Cyclones exemplifies a culture of hard work and ambition that resonates beyond the court.

As Iowa State prepares for what promises to be an electrifying matchup, fans, students, and alumni alike are ready to rally behind the team. The game will be broadcasted live on truTV at 6:45 p.m., and the anticipation is palpable as the Cyclones attempt to navigate their way deeper into the tournament, armed with the lessons learned from their grueling practices.

With tremendous resolve, the team remains ready to make a significant impact in the tournament. Their extra work ethic and commitment to improvement may very well pave the way to further success as Iowa State continues its pursuit of greatness.

As the nation turns its eyes to the NCAA Tournament, the Cyclones, with their blend of ambition, work ethic, and teamwork, stand poised to become a force to reckon with.
