IOS 18.4 Enhances Photos App With New Features

The latest update introduces improved filtering, sorting, and privacy options for users.

Apple's latest operating system update, iOS 18.4, is currently in beta testing and is set to enhance the user experience of its Photos app significantly. This update introduces a variety of new features and improvements aimed at providing users with more flexibility and control over their photo collections.

One of the standout features in iOS 18.4 is the introduction of new filtering options. Users can now filter their photo and video collections using two new criteria: 'Shared with you' and 'Not included in an album'. This enhancement allows for easier navigation, enabling users to quickly locate specific photos or videos that meet these criteria. By clicking on the icon featuring two vertical arrows in the bottom left corner of the screen, users can access these filtering options, streamlining their search process.

Additionally, the update brings a new sorting method for albums. Users can now choose to sort their albums by 'Date modified', in addition to the existing options of sorting by name or custom order. This new feature ensures that the most recently modified albums appear at the top of the list, making it simpler for users to find their latest edits or additions.

Another notable change in the iOS 18.4 update is the renaming of certain terms within the Photos app. The previous terms 'Grille' and 'Liste' have been updated to 'Vue de liste' and 'Photo clé'. While this change does not alter the functionality of the app, it may cause some initial confusion among users who are familiar with the old terminology.

Privacy has also been a focus in this update. iOS 18.4 allows users to disable the visibility of certain albums for privacy reasons. Specifically, the 'Recently viewed' and 'Recently shared' albums, which compile all the photos and videos a user has recently accessed or shared, can now be hidden from view. This option can be found in the settings under Settings → Apps → Photos, where users can scroll down to find the toggle for 'Show Recently Viewed and Shared'. This feature addresses user concerns regarding privacy and helps ensure that sensitive content remains private.

In terms of organization, iOS 18.4 introduces a new 'Edit' button within the 'Utilities' and 'Media types' sections of the Photos app. This button allows users to reorder collections such as Favorites, Hidden, Duplicates, Maps, and Receipts according to their preferences. Previously, these collections were displayed in a fixed order, but now users can customize their layout, enhancing the overall usability of the app.

As Apple continues to enhance its Photos app, users are encouraged to provide feedback on the new features. Many are eager to see further updates and improvements, as the app plays a crucial role in how they manage and interact with their photos and videos.

Overall, iOS 18.4 is shaping up to be a significant update for Apple users, particularly those who rely heavily on the Photos app. With its new filtering options, sorting capabilities, privacy settings, and enhanced organizational features, the update promises to deliver a more user-friendly experience. As the beta testing phase progresses, many are looking forward to the official release and the potential for even more enhancements in the future.
