Invincible Creator Optimistic About Live-Action Movie

Fans eagerly await updates as Season 3 concludes and movie development continues.

In the world of superhero entertainment, few characters have captured audiences just as successfully as Invincible, the brainchild of Robert Kirkman. The animated series, which began its life in 2021 on Prime Video, is a masterclass in character development and compelling storytelling, transforming Mark Grayson, a 17-year-old grappling with the legacy of his father Omni-Man, while navigating a world filled with incredible threats and ethical dilemmas. After the high-stakes and action-packed finale of Season 3, fans are impatiently awaiting news related to the live-action film that was announced back in 2017.

According to Kirkman himself, he would be "shocked" if the live-action Invincible movie doesn’t actually happen. The anticipation surrounding this film has mounted significantly as audiences continue to enjoy the success of the animated series, which echoes Kirkman’s sentiments laid out in a recent exclusive interview with ComicBook. While he admitted that developing the movie with the concurrent success of the television series is both a blessing and a challenge, he assured fans that the movie is still in the works. "Unfortunately, there’s not much I can say. I will say that the television show makes it vastly easier and vastly more difficult in various different aspects of the development of the movie. That’s kind of where I have to leave it, unfortunately. It’s still early going. I would be shocked if it doesn’t happen one day," said Kirkman.

For those keeping track, the live-action Invincible movie has been in development for seven years as of March 20, 2025. This high-profile film was initially announced before the conclusion of the original comic series in 2018, well ahead of the animated series’ eight-episode order from Prime Video issued in June of the same year. Kirkman elaborated that one of the reasons for the prolonged development process is the need for the film to stand apart from the animated series while remaining loyal to its essence and narrative. "It’s been in development for a long time, and it’s probably going to be in development for a while longer. Just because, in relation to the show, it has to provide a different experience," Kirkman stated. "It has to still be true to Invincible in some interesting ways. But it has to be its own thing. It has to stand on its own. And so that’s something we’re spending a lot of time crafting, but I think when it finally happens, it’s gonna be really cool."

Fans have reason to be excited, particularly given the success of the animated series’ Season 3 finale, which boasts an impressive 9.9/10 rating on IMDb, positioning it among the highest-rated TV episodes of all time. This excitement goes hand in hand with the eagerness for the next installment in the animated series, as Season 4 reportedly completed its voice recordings and is aiming for a release in 2026. With a dedicated audience backing the franchise, it could propel the film’s production forward.

The animated series itself encapsulates the tumultuous journey of Mark Grayson. As he begins to develop his own superpowers, the story unfolds against a backdrop of intergalactic conflict and challenging relationships, particularly with his father, Omni-Man. As viewers witness Mark step into the legacy left by Omni-Man, they are treated to a richly woven narrative that has captivated fans from the onset.

As for the live-action adaptation, the path forward is still unclear, but the excitement and enthusiasm surrounding the animated series undeniably set a firm foundation for the film. Producer Seth Rogen has previously indicated how interconnected both projects are, but Kirkman’s recent remarks illustrate that while the creative team may have a clear vision, they are also treading carefully to ensure that both the animated series and the live-action film coexist without contradicting each other.

While the larger implications of the live-action movie remain uncertain, Kirkman’s commitment to quality and fan satisfaction is evident. As he pursues the best possible storytelling grounded in essentials of the Invincible legacy, audiences continue to rally behind Mark Grayson and his quest for identity in a world caught between heroism and familial expectations.

For now, fans of Invincible have all three seasons available for streaming on Prime Video as they eagerly wait for news of the film. Kirkman's comments suggest the journey for this potential live-action blockbuster will take time, but the wait may be worth it for a production that gets to the heart of what makes Invincible so compelling.
