India is launching an extensive investigation over allegations linking Canadian colleges to human trafficking networks smuggling international students across the Canada-U.S. border. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) of India revealed shocking evidence of these practices, which reportedly involve dozens of institutions and have triggered significant international concern.
The investigation was prompted by the tragic discovery on January 19, 2022, when Jagdish Baldevbhai Patel, along with his wife and two children, were found dead near the border between Manitoba and the United States. This dreadful incident highlighted the perils faced by individuals caught up in illegal smuggling operations attempting to traverse the Canadian-American border.
Recent rulings from the Minnesota courts brought to light the judicial proceedings against two men—Steve Shand from Florida and Harshkumar Patel, arrested in Chicago. Both were found guilty of multiple offenses related to the illegal transport of individuals across state lines for profit. Prosecutors described Harshkumar Patel as the mastermind behind the scheme, coordinating logistics, with Shand operating as the driver who transported victims. Allegedly, they were attempting to cross with eleven Indian immigrants, but only seven managed to complete the perilous trek.
