An investigation is underway following an incident involving a young Cronulla Sharks fan and South Sydney’s long-time mascot, Reggie the Rabbit, during a National Rugby League (NRL) match. Footage capturing the moment was uploaded to social media, showing the incident unfold on March 22, 2025, as the Rabbitohs faced off against the Sharks at Shark Park, where the Rabbitohs suffered a 27-12 defeat.
In the video, Reggie the Rabbit is seen walking towards the tunnel when he appears to shove a nine-year-old boy, who was identified as a Sharks supporter named Benji. During the match, Benji had been standing alongside his friends, anxiously hoping to get a high five from the beloved mascot as he left the field. Instead, Reggie seemingly pushed him away, and a nearby security guard quickly intervened.
The shocking moment has sparked widespread attention, prompting both clubs involved, as well as the NRL, to launch investigations. Reggie the Rabbit, whose alter ego is 81-year-old Charlie Gallico, has been a beloved mascot for over 20 years, known for his playful antics and interactions with fans.
Following the clip gaining traction on social media, various officials expressed their concern regarding the incident. Dino Mezzatesta, the CEO of Cronulla Sharks, stated, “We were made aware of the incident and both us and Souths are investigating. The NRL has also been made aware of what happened. I saw something where the mother said the kid was in shock. It’s obviously an unfortunate incident.”
Benji was reportedly with his father at the match to support some cousins playing during halftime. His mother, Caroline Agius, later described the incident, explaining how Benji had outstretched his hand, anticipating a high five from the mascot. Instead, after the interaction, he seemed bewildered and was admonished by the security guard for getting too close.
Caroline Agius said, “From what my son Benji has told me, he was with his mates lining up there and they could see Reggie Rabbit coming up. And they were all like: ‘Let’s see if we can get a high-five.’ So Benji popped his hand out, as you can see in the video, and he went to get a high-five but was pushed away instead.”
Benji's mother mentioned that her son felt like he had done something wrong and had left him in a state of shock. She assured him that he had not done anything inappropriate while simply supporting his football team. Moreover, she indicated that they visited the police station later, but authorities informed her that they did not consider the incident to be an assault.
While discussions about the incident unfold, the Rabbitohs have reached out to the boy's family, assuring them that they will investigate the matter thoroughly. A statement from the Rabbitohs read, “We have been made aware of this incident this afternoon. We are investigating what happened here and will have no further comment to make until our investigation is complete.”
The mother of Benji has actively sought support, even posting on the 'Everything Sutherland Shire' Facebook group, crying out for witnesses or anyone who had information regarding the incident. Unfortunately, her post was reportedly deleted shortly after it went live, leading to questions around the administration’s handling of such sensitive matters.
Benji’s experience highlights concerns regarding the behavior of mascots at sports events—places traditionally viewed as family-friendly and inclusive. Caroline Agius also articulated her disbelief about the unwanted encounter, remarking, “It’s a bit of a shock to see that this is how young fans are treated. It shouldn’t happen, especially to a child from a grown man. It’s not what you expect at all. You wouldn’t expect that at a family-friendly event.”
As the investigation progresses, many are eager to understand how this unexpected incident unfolded and what the ramifications may be for those involved. In a prominent light, Reggie the Rabbit, once a figure of joy and cheer leading the support from the sidelines, now stands at the focal point of significant scrutiny.
Ultimately, as clubs continue to ensure that safety and happiness are paramount at their events, the outcome of this inquiry may lead to a shift in protocols regarding mascot interactions at games, ensuring that incidents like these do not tarnish the experience of young fans and their families in the future.
