Internet Celebrity Nai Nai Returns To Taiwan After Seven Years

Su Chen-tuan surrenders to authorities amid fraud allegations after fleeing to Canada.

After nearly seven years of evading authorities, internet celebrity Su Chen-tuan, known as 'Nai Nai', has returned to Taiwan to face charges of illegal fundraising amounting to 100 million yuan. On May 1, 2025, she arrived at Taoyuan Airport at 4:55 AM on China Airlines flight BR35, escorted by the legal secretary from the Canadian Investigation Bureau.

Su Chen-tuan, who gained fame as a pioneering blogger in 2004 with her site 'Nai Nai's Fortune Diary', has been living in Canada since late 2018, following accusations of fraud connected to a medical beauty clinic she co-founded with her ex-boyfriend Huang Po-chien. Upon her return, she was immediately taken into custody by the Taipei City Investigation Office.

In a handwritten letter sent to the authorities prior to her return, Su expressed her desire to cooperate with the investigation, asserting her innocence and stating that her only concern was for her elderly parents. "I did not commit fraud, I did not raise funds illegally, and I did not embezzle any money," she wrote, emphasizing her wish to help clarify the situation.

Su's journey back to Taiwan marks the end of a lengthy legal saga that began when she and her family fled the country on November 30, 2018, just as their beauty clinic unexpectedly shut down. Reports indicate that Huang Po-chien, who remains at large, had borrowed heavily from underground banks to expand their clinic, accumulating debts that led to the clinic's collapse and subsequent flight.

During her time in Canada, Su applied for refugee status, which allowed her to live and work there despite her legal troubles back in Taiwan. She reportedly faced no direct threats from creditors during her years in hiding, but as her father's health declined, she reconsidered her situation. In April 2025, after contacting the Investigation Bureau's legal secretary in Canada, she made the decision to return.

Upon her arrival, Su was escorted by law enforcement officials and subjected to a thorough identity check before being taken to the Taipei City Investigation Office for interrogation. The authorities are also investigating Huang Po-chien's whereabouts and financial situation, as rumors circulate regarding his involvement in gambling and subsequent debts.

Huang Po-chien's father, Huang Li-hsiung, a prominent obstetrician, had previously returned to Taiwan in May 2024 and was released on bail, while his wife faced separate legal issues. The couple had also sought political asylum in Canada, claiming they were pursued by gangsters, but their request was denied.

As the investigation unfolds, many are left wondering about the future of Su Chen-tuan and the implications of her return. Her case has drawn significant media attention, not just for its legal ramifications but also for the dramatic fall from grace of a once-celebrated internet figure.

In her letter, Su noted her separation from Huang Po-chien, whom she referred to as her 'ex-boyfriend', suggesting a clear break from the past. This development has led to speculation about her motivations for returning to Taiwan and her willingness to assist in the ongoing investigation.

The Taipei District Prosecutor's Office has indicated that they have not yet received any formal communication from Su regarding her return or her claims of innocence. Nonetheless, they are prepared to proceed with the investigation based on the existing evidence.

As the story continues to develop, the public remains keenly interested in how Su's return will impact the legal proceedings against her and others involved in the case. With Su now back in Taiwan, the authorities are expected to delve deeper into the allegations of fraud and the financial dealings that led to the original charges.

Su Chen-tuan's saga serves as a cautionary tale about the risks associated with fame, fortune, and the consequences of legal troubles. It highlights the complexities of navigating personal relationships and business ventures, especially when the stakes are as high as they were in her case.

As the investigation proceeds, many questions remain unanswered: Will Su's cooperation lead to a resolution of the charges against her? What will happen to Huang Po-chien, who remains a fugitive? And how will the public's perception of Su evolve in light of her return?

For now, Su Chen-tuan's story is far from over, and the eyes of the nation will be watching closely as the legal proceedings unfold.
