International Women’s Day (IWD) 2025 is shaping up to be a vibrant celebration, with various events across the globe aimed at empowering women and promoting gender equity. Leading the charge, French cosmetics giant L’Oréal Paris launched its IWD campaign on February 21, more than three weeks prior to the official date of March 8. Through its campaign titled “It’s ok, every step was worth it,” the brand aims to resonate with women’s lived experiences, particularly those in China.
According to their campaign, L’Oréal Paris released a series of 14 podcast episodes, discussing women’s experiences, which will be complemented by livestreams on platforms like Weibo on February 26. The campaign features short video adverts starring prominent Chinese actresses including Tang Yan, Zhong Chuxi, and Singaporean-born Gong Li. While the campaign promotes empowerment, it arrives at a time when L’Oréal has reported its highest revenue growth in five years, yet has faced as much as 10 years of negative growth within the Chinese market. Industry experts suggest this raises the challenge for brands like L’Oréal to dig deep and engage with lower-tier cities for market accessibility.
On March 8, Glasgow will witness the return of the popular Indie Club, bringing together music, brunch, and the spirit of celebration at St Luke's. Attendees can enjoy welcome cocktails and delicious brunch offerings, with tickets also ensuring support for Glasgow Women's Aid through donations for each ticket sold. This event not only focuses on enjoyment but also highlights charity and community involvement, making it meaningful beyond just food and music, as guests will be able to engage with permanent jewellery creators from B51 Boutique during the event.
Before the main celebrations on March 8, another notable event is set to occur on March 7 at Pier 6, organized by the IWD Committee and the Women’s Resource Centre (WRC). This annual celebration will see women from various backgrounds united to share their experiences and engage in empowering discussions. WRC executive director Juanae Crockwell emphasized this event's importance, stating, "International Women’s Day is our signature event and a highlight on our annual calendar. It’s not only a time for celebration but also a call to action. We invite the community to join us for an empowering and thought-provoking morning."
This year’s WRC gathering adopts a TEDx-style format, showcasing inspiring speakers like Donna Raynor, Kirsten Beasley, and Sherrie-Lynn Lilley. The event aims to spark insightful conversations, culminating in the presentation of the coveted Woman of the Year Award, acknowledging those who have significantly contributed to gender equality and women's empowerment.
All proceeds from ticket sales, priced at $45, will go directly to support the WRC's advocacy programs aimed at empowering women throughout the year, ensuring the impact of the IWD celebrations lasts long after the events have concluded.
Through these gatherings—whether it’s L’Oréal’s artistic campaigns, the joyful brunches at Indie Club, or thought-provoking discussions at Pier 6—the essence of International Women’s Day focuses not solely on celebration, but also on galvanizing action and fostering community support for gender equality. With so much planned for the week surrounding March 8, the call for engagement and support from everyone promises to echo well beyond the day itself.
