International Women’s Day 2025 Celebrations Spotlight Achievements

Countries and institutions unite to promote women's rights and empowerment on March 8.

International Women's Day 2025 is set to be celebrated on March 8, with various global initiatives aimed at recognizing women's achievements and advocating for gender equality. This year's theme, "Accelerate Action," resonates deeply as communities come together to spotlight the immense contributions and rights of women and girls.

The Government of Canada emphasizes amplifying the voices of all women, particularly those facing barriers, under the theme "Strength in Every Story." This initiative reflects the shared goal of promoting rights and empowerment for all women, regardless of their backgrounds or identities. Schools and universities across the nation are taking part in these observations, highlighting the efforts required to tackle systemic inequalities.

At the University of Guelph, numerous events are planned to celebrate International Women's Day, with themes focusing on female entrepreneurship and community engagement. University officials stated, "This year, we’ve curated a list of seven alumnae-owned businesses, ranging from delectable food to stylish fashion, deserving recognition and support during IWD.” On March 6, the Gender Equity Advisory Committee will host discussions promoting women's achievements and focusing on advancing women's roles in various sectors.

Meanwhile, Oregon State University also prepares to honor International Women’s Day with a series of events showcasing the accomplishments of women within their institution. Ed Feser, Provost at OSU, noted, "Celebr celebrating International Women's Day gives our community an opportunity to acknowledge the accomplishments of all OSU women faculty, staff and students, and to continue to strive for greater gender equality everywhere." Events will include networking opportunities and discussions aimed at enhancing gender equity.

On the international stage, various organizations are engaging communities to discuss all things related to women’s empowerment and rights. The United Nations has also taken up the theme, “For ALL women and girls: Rights. Equality. Empowerment,” emphasizing the global need for equality and support.

Further, states and regions within India are also participating significantly. The Jammu and Kashmir region recently held meetings led by the Minister for Health and Medical Education, Sakeena Itoo, who remarked, "We must not only acknowledge the incredible contributions of women in every field but alsoensure they have opportunities and support to excel." Preparations for International Women’s Day are underway, focusing on recognizing women's achievements and ensuring access to various governmental schemes aimed at empowering women.

Celebrations also take place elsewhere, such as Sikkim’s Namchi district, where they held the Pre-International Women’s Day celebration under the theme, "Re-Inventing Motherhood: Connecting Mothers Back to Their Childhood Hobbies & Interests." Raj Kumari Thapa, the Deputy Speaker of the Sikkim Legislative Assembly, emphasized the importance of women’s empowerment and community involvement during her address. "Women possess immense power to create a significant impact on society and we must collectively work to shift our mindset from beneficiaries to stakeholders,” she stated, underline the importance of addressing issues like drug misuse and supporting mental health initiatives.

Throughout the month of March, various universities including Nottingham and others have planned events to engage people’s interests and promote gender equality. With creative talks, workshops, and discussions delving deep on topics like reproductive rights and caregiving experiences, these initiatives represent the spirit of International Women's Day.

International Women's Day serves not only as a celebration of achievements but also as a clarion call for activism and advocacy. While significant strides have been made toward gender equality, the observance reminds us of the work still needed to eliminate disparities.
