International Women’s Day 2025: Celebrations, Initiatives, And Actions

Countries and organizations unite to empower women and girls with spirited events and initiatives.

On March 8, 2025, the world will unite to celebrate International Women’s Day (IWD), embracing this year's theme: "For All Women and Girls: Rights, Equality, and Empowerment." This occasion also marks the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Platform for Action, underscoring the urgent need to uphold and protect the rights of women and girls globally.

This year, celebrations will take many forms, with various initiatives aiming to honor women's contributions and advocate for gender equality. For example, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has organized several events to engage its female commuters. Starting from February 24 until IWD, competitions like pebble art and Sudoku will take place at different metro stations. The activities aim to empower women and create awareness, culminating with results announced on March 5 via DMRC's official channels.

Simultaneously, to amplify women’s voices, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has plans to hand over his social media accounts for one day to accomplished women from diverse fields. "On March 8, these women will take over my X and Instagram accounts to share their inspiring journeys. The platform may be mine, but the stories, experiences, and achievements will be theirs," Modi announced, encouraging women across the nation to engage through the NAMO App.

The emphasis on empowering women extends beyond celebrations to notable government initiatives. The Panchayati Raj Ministry is set to introduce mechanisms aimed at enhancing women's active participation at the grassroots level. Under a comprehensive plan dubbed "Tenfold Initiative," measures include regular 'Bal Balika Sabha' meetings for youths and 'Mahila Gram Sabha' for women. These platforms will address key issues affecting women's development and will encourage their involvement within local governance.

Among the proposed goals, there is significant focus on ensuring safety for women and girls, promoting girls' education, and enhancing women's access to economic opportunities through self-help groups (SHGs). A senior officer from the Panchayati Raj Ministry elaborated, stating, "This multi-faceted initiative is built to uplift women, ensuring they play pivotal roles within national development."

Another significant initiative arises from the Pune Metro, which has stated its commitment to gender-inclusive mobility. From March 1 through March 8, the metro will run special travel offers for women, reinforcing safety and convenience. Details about the offers can be accessed via their official website, encouraging more women to utilize public transport.

The spirit of IWD also resonates internationally, as various organizations push for the reduction of gender disparities globally. This includes support for initiatives aligned with the Beijing Platform for Action, which advocates for women's rights and empowerment. The international community is encouraged to fight tirelessly for all women and girls, tackling issues such as systemic barriers and promoting equitable access to resources.

The DMRC's commitment to driving women's empowerment reflects broader societal goals. Not only does it provide space for competitive expression through art and quizzes, but it also serves as recognition of women's role as fundamental contributors to society. Recognizing this contribution helps challenge stereotypes and break down barriers at social levels.

Echoing this sentiment, IWD serves as more than just celebrations; it’s also a global call to action. All participating organizations and individuals have the opportunity to champion causes surrounding women's rights and gender equality. By partaking, they contribute to tangible change, demonstrating solidarity for women's issues and reinforcing the push for equality.

The essence of International Women’s Day 2025 can be captured by the collective resolve to challenge inequities and promote the empowerment of women. It invites every one of us—regardless of gender—to engage with action-oriented solutions, ranging from supporting women-led businesses, advocating for policy changes, or simply engaging with community events.

Our actions today will pave the way for true equality, ensuring the voices of women and girls echo and resonate well beyond March 8. Together, may we continue to strive forward, inspired by the commitment to uplift every woman and girl globally, and create the world where their rights, equality, and empowerment become commonplace realities.
