A unique music competition recently showcased the dedication and talent of foreign participants, as they imitated popular Japanese artists to vie for the title of "Japan's Best Impersonator." The show featured over 160 nominees from 37 countries and regions, from which 12 performers were selected to take the stage and impress both judges and viewers alike.
Hosted by comedian Hiroiki Ariyoshi, the event promises to be both entertaining and humorous, as participants don creative costumes and deliver impressive vocal performances. Local celebrities, including the likes of Olin, comedian Kondo Haruna, Michiko Shimizu, and several others, took on the role of judges, providing insights and ratings for each act.
During the show, contestants from countries such as the United States, Germany, Brazil, and Malaysia, flew to Japan to perform renditions of songs from iconic Japanese artists. Impressively, many of these contestants do not speak Japanese yet managed to memorize the lyrics and deliver heartfelt performances of popular hits from artists like ZARD, Koda Kumi, Superfly, and Mrs. GREEN APPLE.
The event carries its own unique charm, including segments featuring performers who confidently say, "I can imitate their face!" and "I can speak just one word like them!" These funny impersonation skits brought laughter and joy to the audience, showcasing the performers' enthusiasm and engagement with the cultural nuances of their favorite Japanese artists.
Among the competitors is one participant who previously missed out on the championship title during the first edition, returning now for revenge with sharpened skills and maximum effort. Their enthusiasm adds tension and excitement to this year's competition.
After witnessing the outstanding performances filled with effort and emotion, Ariyoshi expressed his relief and pride, stating, "I was worried if we could maintain the quality of the first edition, but everyone has worked hard to even surpass it, and I feel relieved. I was delighted to hear how much passion each performer has for Japan, and the effort they put forth was evident and heartwarming."
He added, "Even those who cannot speak Japanese performed astonishingly well, and seeing them memorize the lyrics and perform with correctness shows how much they truly appreciate and love Japanese music. It made me wonder whether everyone actually went through auditions!"
The air is thick with anticipation, as the competition heated up with fiercely fought battles to determine who will emerge victorious. It becomes clear with each performance of tracks from beloved artists like Ado, Hikaru Utada, YUKI, and Sayuri Ishikawa, just how much these international performers are willing to invest to show their admiration and respect for their idols.
