International Outrage Grows Over Violence Against Hindus

Leaders and organizations worldwide unite to condemn the persecution faced by minority communities in Bangladesh.

Recent weeks have seen mounting international condemnation over the shocking violence directed at minority Hindu communities in Bangladesh. The situation reached new heights of alarm with reports detailing the severe persecution faced by Hindus, drawing attention from global leaders and organizations.

Australian MP Julian Leeser has become one of the prominent voices speaking out against this crisis. During his address in the Australian Parliament, he stated, "I call on this House to acknowledge the humanitarian catastrophe, unfolded right now in Bangladesh. Sadly, it is not a new occurrence, but one increasing in severity and frequency. Hindu neighborhoods are targeted; households, temples, and workplaces are being attacked by large mobs." His remarks highlight the urgent need for global awareness and action, asserting, "The plight of the Bangladeshi Hindus cannot be ignored." He called for protection of all citizens, regardless of beliefs or affiliations.

The United Hindu Council has taken it upon itself to shed light on these atrocities through their 'AskYunusWHY' initiative. Launched on December 23, the campaign aims to raise awareness about the violence against not just Hindus, but also Buddhists, Christians, and other minorities. Billboards displaying potent messages have gone up across California, prompting discussions around the discrimination and violence inflicted on Bangladeshi minorities. Council members insist, "The harm and violence being perpetrated on minority communities under the governance of Mohammad Yunus is highly regrettable. He and his government should be inclusive of all Bangladeshis and stop oppressing the minorities based on their religion."

On December 30, members of the Bangladeshi-Canadian Hindu community organized protests across Montreal, calling attention to the severe injustices their compatriots face. Demonstrators, including Christians and Jews, marched through Côte des Neiges, asserting, "This is not just about the persecution of Hindus, it’s about humanitarian crisis requiring international attention." The group stressed the necessity for immediate action, with protestors citing incidents of killings and the destruction of religious sites as evidence of the deepening crisis.

Notably, recent political upheaval has exacerbated the plight of Hindus. Following the departure of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina amid social unrest on August 5, the newly formed interim government has been accused of implementing policies favoring radical elements, leading to increased violence against minorities. This disturbing trend has even seen community leaders like Chinmoy Krishna Das face imprisonment under dubious allegations after they spoke out against the injustices.

Swami Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati, the Shankaracharya of India, met with Bangladeshi Hindus seeking intervention from the Indian government to address their concerns. He pledged to bring their grievances to light, insisting, "Hindus are being persecuted solely because of their faith. I will convey their concerns to the Indian government." His intervention emphasizes not only the need for governmental action but also the significance of international dialogue on such issues.

The escalation of violence against Hindus has prompted responses from international leaders, including the U.S. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan, who recently engaged with Yunus, urging him to safeguard religious minorities. During this pivotal conversation, Sullivan voiced concerns over the deteriorative situation and reinforced the commitment to human rights. Reports indicate there have been over 2,200 violent attacks against Hindus this year alone, marking over 700% increase compared to previous years.

Congressmember Shri Thanedar spotlighted the urgency, stating, "The time has come for the US Congress and the US government to take action." His call for concrete measures reflects widespread apprehension within the international community, eager to advocate for those suffering from violence and persecution.

Despite Yunus' promises to protect human rights, skepticism remains. Reports continue to flood in about attacks on Hindus, leading to increased calls for accountability. The demands for international intervention are louder than ever, echoing the need for change and lasting peace for the minorities long oppressed.

With the spotlight on Bangladesh, it becomes clear: the world is watching. The actions taken by nations, leaders, and communities will shape the narrative for the vulnerable populations enduring strife. It’s not just about voicing concerns; it’s about ensuring the implementation of humane practices for all, no matter their religion or beliefs. The call for action resonates, demanding justice and safety for those caught up in the turmoil.
