OXON HILL, Md. — International leaders gathered at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) 2025 this week, showcasing the growing trend of global conservatism and right-wing populism. Among the prominent figures was Argentine President Javier Milei, who energized the crowd with his call to action for shrinking government size, likening his methods to those of former President Donald Trump and entrepreneur Elon Musk.
CPAC, the premier annual event for American conservatives, brought together thousands of politicians, activists, and influencers, marking another step toward uniting right-wing movements around the globe. Dubbed the "Woodstock for conservatives," this year’s conference featured many high-profile speakers, including U.S. President Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance.
For Milei, known for his fiery rhetoric and flamboyant presence, this was his third CPAC appearance. Wielding his signature tool, the chainsaw, he symbolically declared war against bureaucracy, telling the audience, "We must stand together, establishing channels of cooperation throughout the world." Musk, who made his first appearance at CPAC, effusively waved the chainsaw as he introduced Milei, calling it “the chainsaw of bureaucracy.”
CPAC has increasingly expanded its horizons beyond U.S. borders. Launched as domestic gatherings, the CPAC's first international conference took place in Japan back in 2017. Since then, the event has infiltrated various countries, including Australia, Brazil, and South Korea, as well as Hungary, Mexico, Israel, and Argentina last year, inviting global leaders from conservative movements.
Alongside Milei, Jair Bolsonaro, the former president of Brazil, also took the stage. Despite being barred from holding office until 2030 and facing serious charges following his controversial presidential term, Bolsonaro remains a significant figure within right-wing politics and continues to rally support for conservative ideologies.
Robert Fico, the Prime Minister of Slovakia, was another noteworthy speaker at the conference. Despite leading a left-wing populist party, Fico's presence at CPAC sparked intrigue. His previous remarks, which include derogatory comments about journalists and vocal opposition to European sanctions on Russia, have drawn criticism. Recently, he survived an assassination attempt, possibly linked to his controversial stances.
Mateusz Morawiecki, the former Prime Minister of Poland, made his appearance at CPAC after actively participating at CPAC Hungary last year. He highlights the prevalent immigration issues at the forefront of Europe’s political discourse. At last year’s event, he praised Hungary's Viktor Orbán for his stringent policies on immigration which he credited for maintaining order amid the crisis.
Meanwhile, former British Prime Minister Liz Truss, underscoring her message of change, called Britain “a failed state” ruled by socialists. Truss, sounding the alarm for major shifts, stated, "We want a Trump revolution in Britain," prompting applause from CPAC attendees. Her passionate plea reflects the party's desire for revival and agility to counter left-leaning politics.
CPAC's growing international presence mirrors the ascent of far-right populism globally. The conference's intent is not merely to discuss policies but also to forge alliances across borders, strengthen conservative movements, and rally against what they label “globalism.” It aims to serve as outreach and mobilization for like-minded individuals who resonate with conservative values.
The undercurrents of cooperation and camaraderie among international conservatives became evident as they gathered to strategize for future elections, shared methods, and outlined ambitions to counter perceived threats from leftist ideologies. The energy exuded during this year’s event was palpable, with leaders echoing sentiments of unity and resolve against what they deem as encroaching authoritarianism.
With charismatic figures like Milei leading the charge and high-profile appearances by people like Musk, CPAC 2025 encapsulated the fervor of contemporary conservatism, setting the stage for future alignments and endeavors among right-wing parties around the globe. It remains evident; these leaders believe conservatism's time to shine on the world stage has arrived.
