International Francophonie Day, celebrated on March 20, marks a global recognition of the French language and the cultural diversity of francophone communities around the world. This year's observance takes on special significance as the Organisation internationale de la Francophonie (OIF) sets its educational focus on sustainable development.
Since its inception in 1988 to commemorate the signing of the Niamey Convention in Niger on March 20, 1970, the event has continually highlighted the importance of the French language. With more than 321 million people speaking French across five continents, the language has solidified its standing as the fifth most spoken language globally and the fourth most prevalent language on the internet.
The reach of the Francophone community is vast, with countries holding a total of 1.2 billion inhabitants and collectively accounting for 16 percent of the world's wealth. It is noteworthy that there are 144 million learners of French globally, making it the second most-taught foreign language in the world.
Despite fluctuations in learner numbers in Europe, the OIF reported that the overall count of French speakers continues to rise. This growth can be attributed largely to African nations, where approximately 60 percent of the 212 million daily users of French reside.
The emphasis for International Francophonie Day 2025 is aligned with the theme "je m'éduque donc j'agis" which translates to "I educate myself, therefore I act." The OIF elaborates that education plays a crucial role in shaping inclusive societies, especially amid a backdrop of crises and changes, underscoring the need for enlightened citizens capable of tackling contemporary and future challenges.
Education is one facet of the OIF's broader mission which accentuates the importance of promoting peace, democracy, and human rights. The organization has an operating budget of €68.62 million for the current year aimed at ongoing initiatives to strengthen these ideals.
This year's observance comes at a crucial juncture, as it follows the recent exit of three countries from the OIF. Niger and Burkina Faso left on Monday, March 17, 2025, and were soon followed by Mali on March 18, 2025. All three countries had been suspended due to military coups occurring in 2023, 2022, and 2020, respectively. This exodus highlights ongoing political upheavals that affect the member states within the Francophone community.
