In a remarkable display of interfaith harmony, Guru Nanak Darbar Gurudwara in Dubai hosted its 13th annual interfaith iftar on March 19, 2025. This year, the event brought together around 275 individuals from various faiths and over 30 nationalities, all breaking bread together in a celebration of unity and tolerance.
As the sun set, attendees experienced an iftar unlike any other. A vegetarian spread was showcased, aligning with the Gurudwara's principles, while all guests participated in local customs by removing their footwear and wearing head coverings if they did not already have them. This atmosphere of respect was palpable, reflecting the ethos of the UAE as a melting pot of cultures.
Surender Singh Kandhari, the chairman of the Guru Nanak Darbar Gurudwara, emphasized the purpose behind the event, stating, "By hosting the iftar, we are spreading peace, love and humanity and expressing our gratitude towards the UAE Rulers for allowing us to have harmony in the country and wishing our Muslim brothers and sisters a blessed month and praying for their prosperity." The statement resonated with the crowd, highlighting the shared values of respect and coexistence amongst various religions.
This year's iftar particularly resonated with the ongoing "Year of Community," a theme championed by the UAE’s leadership. Kandhari referred to the slogan, "Hand in Hand," emphasizing the importance of supporting one another within a diverse community.
Mirza Al Sayegh, a former UAE diplomat and regular participant at the Gurudwara’s iftar, articulated the deep integration of cultures present at the event. He remarked, "Every time I come to attend the Gurudwara’s iftar, I am reminded that all the religions talk about peace and harmony. The iftar here demonstrates the deep integration of people from diverse backgrounds. This is also an occasion which brings the UAE and India together as well." His perspective speaks to the broader narrative within the UAE that emphasizes inclusivity and mutual respect.
Indian Consul General Satish Kumar Sivan also attended the event, expressing his appreciation for how the Gurudwara impacts community relations. He stated, "I am glad to be here for the Gurudwara’s iftar. I congratulate them for hosting this event for so many years and for upholding the spirit of tolerance, inclusivity and wonderful humanity that this country is upholding under the leadership of the President and the Prime Minister of the UAE. It is an opportunity for us to show that India stands with the UAE in upholding the spirit of tolerance." His acknowledgement strengthens the notion that diplomatic relations can be fostered through community engagement and respect for one another’s cultures.
One of the attendees, Steven Ericksen, a volunteer with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, traveled from Abu Dhabi to participate in the iftar. He described his experience positively, saying, "You don’t feel putting a turban on your head or removing your shoes as an inconvenience. In fact, it is an honour to be here and to be part of their culture." Ericksen’s comments underline how cultural practices, though potentially unfamiliar, can be embraced as moments of learning and respect.
The interfaith iftar this year at Guru Nanak Darbar Gurudwara was not just a communal meal; it was a deeper exploration of what it means to live harmoniously amidst diversity. The event showcased the commitment of the Gurudwara to community service, as it regularly extends support to all whether through meals served in its kitchen or through host events that build connections across different faiths.
As people from different walks of life gathered, the essence of Ramadan was mirrored in the gathering. The act of sharing a meal together serves as a potent reminder that at the heart of every faith lies the ideal of compassion, and the UAE continues to stand as an example of peace and unity.
In a time where tensions often arise between various communities, the interfaith iftar exemplifies a powerful narrative of hope. It tells the story of collaboration, respect, and a mutual desire for peace—qualities essential for thriving societies. As Dubai celebrates religious diversity and cultural traditions, events like these pave the way for a more understanding and united future.
