Inter Milan Advances After Dramatic Draw With Bayern

Lautaro Martínez scores milestone goal as Inter sets sights on Barcelona

On April 16, 2025, Inter Milan faced Bayern Munich at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza in the second leg of the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals, resulting in a thrilling 2-2 draw. This outcome allowed Inter to advance to the semi-finals with a 4-3 aggregate score.

Having won the first leg 2-1, Inter aimed to maintain their lead against a Bayern side eager for a comeback. Bayern Munich fielded the same lineup that recently drew with Dortmund, indicating their intent to utilize their best players despite injuries to key figures like Hiroki Ito and Jamal Musiala. On the other hand, Inter made a slight adjustment, replacing left wing-back Augusto with Dimarco, showcasing their strategic approach to the match.

The action kicked off with Bayern looking to seize control early. In the 3rd minute, Olicé received the ball in the penalty area and passed it to Thomas Müller, whose shot was blocked, resulting in a corner kick. Inter responded quickly, with Thuram holding off defenders before Dimarco's shot was easily saved by Bayern's goalkeeper, Ulbich, in the 9th minute. The first half saw both teams exchange chances, but neither could find the back of the net, leading to a tense atmosphere as the teams went into halftime.

As the second half began, Bayern struck first. In the 52nd minute, Leon Goretzka set up Harry Kane, who scored with a precise shot through Dimarco's legs, leveling the aggregate score at 2-2. However, Inter was quick to respond; just six minutes later, Lautaro Martínez headed in a corner from Dimarco to regain the lead for Inter at 3-2 on aggregate.

Not content with just a one-goal lead, Inter extended their advantage three minutes later when Benjamin Pavard headed in another corner, making it 4-2 on aggregate. Bayern, now needing at least two goals to advance, made tactical substitutions, bringing on Serge Gnabry and Raphaël Guerreiro to bolster their attack.

In the 76th minute, Bayern managed to narrow the gap when Daiyaer scored from a rebound after Guerreiro's cross was initially blocked. This brought the score to 2-2, with Bayern trailing 4-3 on aggregate. The game intensified as Bayern pushed forward in search of an equalizer. Despite their efforts and a flurry of substitutions, including the introduction of Coman and Pavlovich, Bayern could not find the crucial goal.

As the match entered stoppage time, Inter's defense held firm against Bayern's relentless attacks. Ultimately, Inter managed to preserve their aggregate lead, securing their place in the semi-finals against Barcelona.

Lautaro Martínez, who scored one of Inter's goals, reached a significant milestone by netting his 150th goal for the club, becoming the first foreign player in Inter's history to achieve this feat. After the match, Lautaro expressed his pride in the team's performance, stating, "It was an incredible match. I will never forget it. Inter has guts. We are determined and unyielding. We have character, heart, and brains. It's tough, but we showed that we can do great things. Every year we try to win everything."

Looking ahead, Lautaro acknowledged the challenge posed by Barcelona in the upcoming semi-finals, remarking, "It will be a big match against a great opponent with a history in the CL, but what I'm thinking about now is the league match, and then we'll think about the CL."

As Inter prepares for their semi-final clash, they will also focus on their Serie A campaign, where they currently sit at the top of the table. Their next match is against Bologna on April 20, 2025.
