Intense Rains Expected In Southeast Brazil This Week

A humidity channel will bring heavy rainfall to Minas Gerais, São Paulo, and Rio de Janeiro, prompting alerts and safety warnings.

Intense rains are on the horizon for the southeastern states of Brazil, including Minas Gerais, São Paulo, and southern Rio de Janeiro, as a humidity channel is set to form on Wednesday, April 16, 2025. This atmospheric river will transport moisture from the Amazon region, leading to significant rainfall across the area.

According to the National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet), an orange alert has been issued for the Triangle and southern Minas, northern São Paulo, and parts of Rio de Janeiro. The forecast indicates that these regions could experience substantial rainfall, with wind gusts potentially reaching up to 100 km/h. Residents are advised to remain vigilant as conditions may deteriorate rapidly.

Even in areas not covered by the alert—such as eastern Minas and Espírito Santo—showers are expected throughout the day. In Vitória, the capital of Espírito Santo, a mostly cloudy day is anticipated, with maximum temperatures reaching 30°C. Meanwhile, in Rio de Janeiro, temperatures are projected to drop to 28°C, while the southern coast of São Paulo, including Iguape, may see some sunshine with a maximum temperature of 26°C. São Paulo itself will experience mild temperatures ranging from 16°C to 23°C.

This humidity channel is a result of a previous cold front that has influenced weather patterns in the region. It will create conditions conducive to heavy rainfall across the southeastern states, particularly affecting Minas Gerais (except for municipalities in the extreme north) and all of Espírito Santo. In Rio de Janeiro, the most intense rains are expected in the center, northwest, and northern areas, while parts of São Paulo, especially the extreme north and northwest, will also be significantly impacted.

As the system progresses, the rains are expected to concentrate on the extreme north of São Paulo on Thursday, April 17, 2025. By the end of Friday, April 18, 2025, the humidity channel will have caused intense rainfall throughout the Southeast, with the highest totals anticipated in Minas Gerais and particularly Espírito Santo, where accumulations could exceed 100 mm. Other states will experience less intense rainfall, but the potential for local disruptions remains.

In light of these forecasts, residents are urged to take precautions. In the event of strong storms, it is crucial to avoid seeking shelter under trees due to the risk of falling branches. Parking vehicles near transmission towers and tall signs should also be avoided. During thunderstorms, small structures like barns and tents should not be used as shelters, as they can attract lightning and pose serious dangers.

Moreover, it is advisable to refrain from using electrical appliances connected to the grid during storms, as they can conduct electricity in the event of a lightning strike. If possible, residents should turn off electrical devices and the main power supply to mitigate risks.

Heavy and continuous rainfall can lead to landslides, which are the second leading cause of fatalities after flooding. Therefore, it is essential to stay alert to changes in hillside conditions and avoid traveling in high-risk areas, particularly near rivers.

As the weekend approaches, localized rains are still expected in Minas Gerais, Espírito Santo, Rio de Janeiro, and northern São Paulo, despite the absence of the atmospheric river. This ongoing weather pattern underscores the importance of staying informed and prepared.

Residents are encouraged to check the specific weather forecast for their municipalities to stay updated on any changes. The situation remains dynamic, and authorities will continue to monitor and report on any developments.

In summary, the upcoming days will be marked by significant rainfall across southeastern Brazil, with a heightened risk of flooding and other weather-related hazards. It is crucial for residents to heed warnings and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety.
