Filming Location Revealed for DMM TV’s ‘The Song of the Outer Road’
Actors Yosuke Kubozuka and Kazuya Kamenashi headline this intense drama, highlighting both the chilling atmosphere of the location and the dynamic between cast members.
On the scorching days of early July, filming for DMM TV’s latest drama series, 'The Song of the Outer Road', took place inside the shadowy confines of a warehouse located in Tokorozawa, Saitama Prefecture. The scene being shot was harrowing, involving the character Shuhei Kishimoto, played by Yosuke Kubozuka, who has committed horrific crimes of child abuse and murder. His character undergoes grim justice, depicted through staged torture sequences.
For those unaware of the backstory, Kishimoto abused his stepdaughter Rin, leading to her tragic and preventable death. His twisted actions are referenced throughout the show, painting him as not only guilty of murder but also as someone who has yet to face true retribution. Remarkably, after serving only seven years, Kishimoto goes on to publish a book, lauded as 'A Love I Wanted', which sensationalizes his criminal history.
During the filming, Kubozuka’s character’s punishment involves the use of real liquid nitrogen, creating dramatic visual effects and clouds of white smoke. The atmosphere was heavy with tension as cast and crew maneuvered around hazardous materials, underscoring the seriousness of the scene. Yet, light moments surfaced, like when Kubozuka lightened the mood by likening the crackling of the roses being frozen to the sound of fried chicken.
Kamenashi, known for his charismatic presence, was also deeply involved on set. With long-haired wigs and hours of tattoo makeup preparation, he embodies the character of Tora, who contrasts with the severity of the scenarios being depicted. Between takes, he maintained camaraderie with his co-stars, reflecting on shared experiences they enjoyed outside of filming, discussing outings to watch the 'Conan' movie together.
Meanwhile, Tanaka portrayed the intense scenes with vigor, enduring the hellish conditions of being drenched, covered in fake blood, and exposed to liquid nitrogen simulations. He received praise from Kubozuka, who dubbed him the “MVP of the Day” for his performance.
The close-knit atmosphere was evident as Kamenashi and Tanaka bonded over their shared scenes, coinciding with Kubozuka's insights about the challenges and depth of their characters. Kubozuka initially hesitated to join the project after cracking open the intense source material, but under management persuasion, he dove headfirst, finding himself captivated by the narrative’s exploration of morality and evil.
Kamenashi expressed enthusiasm about their project collaboration, signifying respect for Kubozuka and the multifaceted nature of the role he plays. Kamenashi mentioned the duality of the project, noting how his character, though representing brightness amid darkness, also grapples with deep-rooted issues presented in the story.
Adding to the rich fabric of character development, Shinch, a comedian and newcomer to the cast, noted his excitement about working with Kamenashi, whom he shares the same age with, bringing fresh perspectives to the characters. While engaging with the demanding material, Shinch also took the opportunity to subtly market himself for future roles.
Director Koichi Shiraishi, celebrated for his work on horror films like the follows-up of 'Kowa Sugiru!' and 'Sayuri', expressed satisfaction with the casting choices and the performance shown throughout the filming process. His expertise bolsters the grim atmosphere of the working conditions but also fosters camaraderie among this ensemble.
The production team continues to navigate the intricacies of filming - balancing chilling scenes with light-hearted moments against the backdrop of their demanding tasks. The juxtaposition of the eerie setting and the spirit of collaboration reflects the underlying message of the show, as it invites viewers to engage with the challenging themes of justice, morality, and the haunting consequences of violence.
This multidimensional show serves not just as entertainment, but as commentary, compelling viewers to question their own perceptions of good and evil through the lens of characters embroiled in dark circumstances.
