Instagram Launches New Personalized Sharing Feature Blend

The new feature allows users to create a shared feed of recommended Reels with friends.

On April 17, 2025, Instagram officially launched a new feature called 'Blend', designed to enhance user engagement through personalized sharing. This innovative function allows users to create a dedicated feed of recommended Reels videos, tailored specifically for themselves and their friends, based on mutual interests.

The concept behind 'Blend' centers on fostering connections among users. By initiating a 'Blend' from a Direct Message (DM), friends can pool their favorite Reels into a single, shared timeline. For instance, if User A and User B decide to create a 'Blend' in a one-on-one chat, the resulting feed will showcase A’s recommended Reels, B’s suggestions, and content that both might find appealing.

To create a 'Blend', users simply tap the Blend icon located in the upper right corner of their DM chat screen and select 'Invite'. In one-on-one chats, the Blend is created once the other party accepts the invitation. For group chats, the Blend becomes active as soon as at least one participant joins.

Once a user joins a 'Blend', they can access the dedicated feed at any time by tapping the Blend icon in the DM. This feed is updated daily, ensuring that the latest recommended content is always available. Each Reels video played in the 'Blend' is clearly labeled with 'Recommended by (account name)', allowing users to see who suggested which video. This feature encourages real-time interaction; when users react to a video, their responses are instantly shared in the chat, creating a communal viewing experience.

Instagram's approach with 'Blend' reflects a strategic shift towards enhancing private user interactions. As the platform continues to prioritize engagement within closed spaces like DMs and Stories, 'Blend' serves as a tool to deepen connections among users. This aligns with Meta's broader vision of moving from public to private interactions, as seen in the enhancements of Facebook's group features and WhatsApp's community functions.

Importantly, 'Blend' operates on an opt-in basis, meaning users can choose to join or leave at any time without any pressure. This design consideration not only enhances user experience but also addresses privacy concerns, ensuring that invited users are not forced into participation.

As Instagram introduces 'Blend', it aims to create a more intimate and personalized social media experience. By integrating users' interests and preferences into a shared feed, the platform is carving out its niche in the competitive landscape dominated by short-form video content.

In conclusion, 'Blend' is a significant step for Instagram as it seeks to redefine how users interact with each other and with content. By merging personal interests into a collective viewing experience, Instagram is not just keeping up with trends but setting new standards for social media engagement.
