A new study outlines the promising application of gastric cancer surgery techniques in bariatric surgery, revolutionizing weight loss procedures.

Innovative methods derived from gastric cancer surgery are significantly enhancing bariatric surgery practices, according to a study published in Scientific Reports. Aimed at improving cosmetic outcomes while minimizing postoperative complications, researchers implemented four advanced techniques during 94 consecutive laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy cases performed by a single highly experienced surgeon at Seoul St. Mary’s Hospital.

The study spans operations from 2019 to 2022 and looks into various elements, including the number of patients, their health complications, and techniques employed, primarily focusing on a mean patient age of 35.9 years and an average body mass index (BMI) of 40.9.

Focusing on minimizing surgical impact while maximizing gains in weight loss, researchers adopted path-breaking strategies from gastric cancer procedures. Among these protocols was the V-shaped liver retraction, which secures a better visual field by simply elevating the liver, reducing potential surgical scars associated with traditional methods. This innovation, along with the use of reduced port surgery and intraoperative endoscopy, contributed significantly to the positive outcomes.

The team reported no complications regarding leakage, bleeding, or any mortality from the procedures, while short-term weight loss results were also promising. A year post-surgery, patients averaged a total weight loss of 28.5%. This impressive figure supports an effective transition to minimally invasive procedures adapted from cancer surgery.

"Gastric cancer surgeons can effectively and safely perform bariatric surgeries using these specialized techniques," noted the authors of the article. The methodology involved a single surgeon performing all surgeries with the support of a multidisciplinary team, ensuring comprehensive evaluation prior to surgery.
