Influencer's £10,000 Birkin Bag Stolen On Oxford Street

Janice Joostema shares her shocking experience amid rising thefts of luxury handbags.

Janice Joostema, a prominent influencer boasting 1.2 million followers on Instagram, faced the distressing ordeal of having her brand new Hermès Birkin bag stolen from her during a shopping trip at Manière De Voir on Oxford Street, London. The incident, which has since drawn public attention, showcases not only the audacity of the robbery but also highlights the alarming trend of luxury handbag thefts sweeping the city.

The theft occurred on December 17, 2024, as Joostema was trying on clothes inside the designer shop's VIP changing room. Eyewitness accounts and CCTV footage captured the shocking moment when the thief, dressed conspicuously in a long white coat, prowled around the high-end store before making her move.

"She probably even saw me topless coming to the room and snatching it," Joostema recounted, expressing her disbelief at the brazen manner of the thief. Reports indicate the stolen item, the red Hermès JPG Shoulder Birkin bag, carries a price tag of approximately £10,700, making it not just a target for thieves but also highly coveted within fashion circles.

According to Joostema, she had her back turned to the door—distracted by the scant views of Oxford Street outside—when the thief slipped inside the changing room. Moments later, footage revealed the suspect walking back out, this time flaunting the stolen Birkin bag on her arm.

Describing the aftermath of the theft, Joostema stated, "To work so hard for something and it be taken like this, is gut-wrenching. It’s not something small, and I don’t want to be materialistic but it’s the human morals and principle of the value of money and it cuts deep for someone who’s always dreamt of having an Hermès bag and it being taken like this."

The incident is not isolated; it is indicative of a larger pattern of handbag thefts occurring across London. Just two weeks prior, two masked robbers had targeted another designer showroom, escaping with thousands of pounds worth of luxury handbags during what was described as a rapid and targeted raid.

Janice's warning to others reflects her concern over personal safety and the increasing risk of such crimes: "Londoners beware. Thieves are coming... when they see you turned, they are watching you... to steal your belongings." This statement serves as both cautionary advice to fellow shoppers and as a reflection on the state of urban crime.

The Metropolitan Police are currently investigating the theft, and as of now, no arrests have been made. A spokesperson confirmed, "On Tuesday, December 17, following circulation of a video of the incident, officers contacted the victim of theft... This matter is under investigation."

This incident, coupled with others, raises significant concerns among luxury retailers and consumers alike, especially with the holiday season approaching. Reports have surfaced of multiple thefts reported throughout London, making boutiques wary as they brace for possible targeted attacks.

The theft at Manière De Voir not only robbed Joostema of her high-value handbag but also forced her to cancel her holiday, as her passport was stored inside the bag. "I was naive and thought maybe she was innocently looking for the bathroom or something," she lamented, admitting how easy it is to underestimate the intentions of strangers.

While unharmed physically, Joostema’s experience raises questions about the ethics of society today. "It's really sad to know people exist... committing such acts of crime against other humans," she expressed, noting the emotional cost of the theft extends well beyond the financial loss.

The fashion world, long enamored with the allure of Birkin bags, now finds itself grappling with the darker reality showcased by Joostema's experience. The stole bag, emblematic of wealth and status, has inadvertently become part of the broader narrative of crime and consumerism intertwining dangerously.

Victims of similar thefts are encouraged to report incidents to the police and to share experiences to prevent others from falling prey to opportunistic criminals. Meanwhile, retailers are left to assess their security measures and provide safer environments for customers.

Joostema's heartfelt call to action before the public serves both as awareness-raising and as a stark reminder of the lengths thieves will go to target high-value items—and ordinary people caught unawares by the cruel reality of urban crime. The influencer, who has captivated many with her lifestyle online, now stands as both victim and advocate for increased vigilance as Londoners navigate their shopping experiences.

This gut-wrenching incident possesses the power to reshape how individuals approach not only dressing room security but also personal belongings, particularly as luxury items become increasingly attractive targets. The glitzy, glamorous allure can easily overshadow the risks lurking just out of sight.

Lessons learned from Joostema's experience could facilitate necessary changes within the retail sector, leading to improved security practices as consumers hope for the return of safety and security amid the grand tapestries of London’s most prestigious shopping districts.
