The importance of Bahasa Indonesia as a linguistic bridge between cultures is underscored by several recent educational initiatives aimed at enhancing language proficiency among international students. These programs not only promote the language itself but also offer rich cultural exchanges, showcasing Indonesia's hospitality and diversity.
One of the standout initiatives this year is the 24th Sakura Program, which was officially opened on February 17, 2025, at STIE Malangkucecwara (MCW) Malang. This program, rooted in collaboration with Kanda University of International Studies from Japan, has facilitated cross-cultural academic exchanges since its inception in 2002. This year, approximately 15 Japanese students are participating, immersing themselves in intensive Bahasa Indonesia courses and engaging with local culture.
Dr. Rina Hapsari, the Dean of STIE Malangkucecwara, expressed her excitement during the opening ceremony, stating, "We are thrilled to host the Sakura Program. This initiative provides international students the opportunity to deepen their knowledge of Indonesia's language and culture." The program's theme, “Keramahtamahan Indonesia” or “Indonesian Hospitality,” sets the tone for their month-long learning experience, which includes language classes and cultural interactions.
The Sakura Program isn't just about language; it's about building lasting relationships. Dra. Suprapti SPd MPd, the director of the Indonesian Studies Program, mentioned the growing interest from Japanese students to learn Bahasa Indonesia. “They not only wish to learn the language but to gain insights about our social life and culture as well,” she explained. Notably, this initiative has led to eight Indonesian students successfully completing internships in Japan, proving its effectiveness for enhancing international career opportunities.
Meanwhile, another shining example of excellence in language teaching was recently recognized. Aisyah Minarni Mukti, a Language Arts teacher at SMPN 2 Pamekasan, received national honors at the 2025 National Literacy Awards, organized by the Ikatan Guru Innovator Literasi Nasional (IGINOS). This award is not only a personal achievement for Aisyah but also highlights the exceptional quality of educators within Indonesian educational institutions. “This award is a great honor for both myself and my school,” Aisyah stated proudly.
Her accomplishments followed rigorous assessments, where she showcased innovative teaching strategies focused on literacy and engagement. Aisyah's work involved creating interactive learning plans to help students draw insights from texts, enhancing their reading comprehension and analytical capabilities. “I hope to cultivate awareness of the importance of reading among our students, helping them develop the ability to manage reading corners effectively,” she said.
Mustakim, the principal of SMPN 2 Pamekasan, praised Aisyah's drive for quality education, emphasizing her role as not just as an educator but as the leader of collaborative learning initiatives. “Her recognition proves our school’s commitment to fostering innovative, quality teachers,” he noted.
On the broader scale of language education, the Ateneo Center for Asian Studies (ACAS) is also joining the ranks of institutions promoting Bahasa Indonesia. They are offering their ambitious Bahasa Indonesia 1 (BIPA 1) course, catering to both Ateneo and non-Ateneo learners starting March 12, 2025. This accessible course consists of online sessions twice weekly, making it reachable even for beginners.
With the growing relevance of Bahasa Indonesia, the ACAS course focuses not just on language mechanics but on practical communication skills, contextualizing Indonesia's role as Southeast Asia’s largest economy. “Learning Bahasa Indonesia opens doors to business, travel, and cultural exchanges across Indonesia and the ASEAN region,” as stated by the program coordinators. They encourage prospective learners to register now, emphasizing the competitive edge gained through language education.
The ever-increasing interest and initiatives surrounding Bahasa Indonesia point to its significance on the global stage. The interactive programs, academic recognitions, and international cooperation lay foundational blocks for broader appreciation of Indonesia's rich cultural and linguistic diversity. Each endeavor not only fosters language skills but enhances mutual respect and collaboration between nations, demonstrating how language learning is intertwined with cultural diplomacy.
Through programs like Sakura and individuals like Aisyah Minarni Mukti, it becomes evident how language education can cultivate relationships beyond borders and create platforms for cultural exchange. With growing interest from international students and the continuous efforts of dedicated educators, Bahasa Indonesia is poised to maintain its momentum as it strides confidently onto the world stage.
