Indonesian Badminton Teams Shine At Swiss Open 2025

Amid withdrawals, Indonesian pairs continue to advance, showcasing resilience and potential for future victories.

Jakarta - The Indonesian Badminton Association (PBSI) has decided to withdraw the women's doubles pair of Apriyani Rahayu / Siti Fadia Silva Ramadhanti from the 2025 Swiss Open. Assistant coach of the women's doubles, Nitya Krishinda Maheswari, stated that the decision came after evaluating their recent performances, which did not meet expectations. "The results and performances in the last two tournaments were not very good. We decided to prepare Apri more for the next tournament," said Nitya.

Apriyani and Fadia had recently returned to competition following their appearance at the 2024 Paris Olympics. However, due to recovery needs, Apriyani had stepped back from competitive events. After regaining fitness, they participated in the Orleans Masters and moved on to the All England. The 2025 Swiss Open, scheduled for this week, was meant to be their third competition after returning. "In terms of play, Apri at the time of competition could not showcase her maximum potential," Nitya explained.

Despite the withdrawal of Apri and Fadia, Indonesia still sent a total of five representatives to the Swiss Open, including Febriana Dwipuji Kusuma and Amalia Cahaya Pratiwi, who continue to compete in women’s doubles. Other notable representatives in men's doubles include Putri Kusuma Wardani, Muhammad Shohibul Fikri / Bagas Maulana, Sabar Karyaman Gutama / Moh Reza Pahlevi Isfahani, and Dejan Ferdinansyah / Siti Fadia Silva Ramadhanti.

In a shining moment for Indonesia, Sabar Karyaman Gutama and Muhammad Reza Pahlevi Isfahani secured their ticket to the second round of the 2025 Swiss Open, confirming that Indonesian men's doubles pairs remain competitive. The duo achieved a straightforward victory against Declan Bennet and Ritschard Kong from Ireland, with a final score of 21-6 and 21-11 on Wednesday evening, March 19, 2025.

In an official statement received from the PBSI public relations team, Sabar noted, "In fact, it must be admitted that the opponent is still not very strong. So, in this first round, we're all adjusting to the court conditions and the shuttlecock." With three of Indonesia's men's doubles pairs competing in the tournament at the BWF Super 300 level, Sabar and Reza are the last representatives to secure a place in the second round.

Following their victory, Sabar and Reza will face off against Callum Hemming and Ethan van Leeuwen from the United Kingdom in the second round. Their fellow competitors, Leo Rolly Carnando and Bagas Maulana, will be matched against Fang Chih Lee and Fang Jen Lee from Chinese Taipei. As of Thursday, March 20, 2025, Indonesia secured five tickets to the second round, showcasing their strong presence in the tournament.

The Indonesian hopes for continued success are high as they aim to make their mark in the remainder of the competition. All competing pairs face critical challenges ahead, but the progress of pairs like Sabar and Reza stands as a promising sign. "At least they didn't meet in the early rounds. We hope everything continues to go well," Sabar said in anticipation of their matchups.
