India's PC Market Grows Over 7 Percent Fueled By Consumer Demand

HP leads market share with strong growth driven by online sales and seasonal promotions

India's personal computer market has seen significant growth during the second quarter of 2024, with shipments hitting 3.39 million units. This marks a 7.1% increase compared to the same period last year, according to the latest data from the International Data Corporation (IDC).

HP led the market with a substantial 31.7% share, demonstrating its strong position as the top vendor. Lenovo followed with 17.5%, and Dell and Acer were close behind at 14.8% and 14.7% respectively.

The increase can primarily be attributed to a surge in the consumer segment, which experienced an impressive 11.2% year-on-year growth. The e-tail channel particularly thrived, growing by 22.4%, showing the demographic shift toward online purchases.

Not only did the consumer side flourish, but the commercial segment also enjoyed growth, with demand rising by 3.5% year-on-year. Small and medium businesses (SMBs) contributed significantly, growing by 12.4%, showcasing the increasing reliance on PCs within this sector.

Digital initiatives and campaigns running through the back-to-school sales pushed the demand for consumer PCs higher. Vendors had also prepared for Independence Day sales, bridging promotional strategies to capitalize on the seasonal spike.

Shipments of notebooks saw the most remarkable progression, symbolizing consumer preference for mobile computing solutions. These notebooks increased by 7.4% year-over-year, fueled by both educational and work-from-home requirements.

HP not only grew its overall market share but also dominated the commercial segment with 33.5%. Their product offerings aligned well with corporate needs, securing significant enterprise orders.

On the flip side, Dell faced pressure, particularly within the commercial desktop category, which declined by 15.9% year-over-year. Despite this, Dell managed to see modest growth of 6.4% within its consumer segment, aided by successful campaigns targeting back-to-school shoppers.

Acer stood out as well, recording substantial growth of 38.3% year-on-year, leading the desktop category with a 27.6% share. Their ability to satisfy substantial government orders has paid off, showcasing their agile response to market demand.

Meanwhile, Asus carved out its niche with modest growth of 5.4% and a doubling of its market presence within the commercial segment. The firm is working diligently to expand its offline presence and caters more effectively to commercial clients.

Bharath Shenoy from IDC remarked on the positive trend, stating, "This is the fourth consecutive quarter of year-over-year growth for the consumer segment." Awareness of new products aimed at both consumers and enterprises has bolstered optimism within the tech community.

Looking forward, the emergence of AI-enabled PCs is anticipated to influence market dynamics significantly. While these new devices may not draw immediate consumer interest, they promise to reshape future decisions for gamers and content creators.

Expectations suggest AI PCs will drive refresh orders for businesses, likely beginning by the third quarter of 2024, increasing the pace of investments in more advanced technology. IDC forecasts suggest these innovations will become focal points, paving ways for legacy systems replacements.

Industry competitors are already responding to the opportunities presented by these new technological advancements, crafting strategies to integrate AI capabilities within their devices. Early adopters of these innovations are expected to gain substantial advantages.

Overall, the Indian PC market's recovery, characterized by increased shipments and changing consumer preferences, reflects broader technological transformations shaping industries worldwide. Such trends indicate not just recovery but enduring change as the focus shifts to more adaptive and intelligent systems.

With IDC's data underlining the 7.1% growth, Indian vendors are strategically positioned to not only sustain but build on this momentum as innovation continues. Strong demand across both consumer and commercial sectors reflects shifting paradigms and the predictive leanings toward technology-enhanced productivity.
