Indian Paralympic Team Celebrates Record Wins At Paris 2024

Following their historic performance, PM Modi meets champions and commits support for future success

Indian Paralympic Team Celebrates Record Wins At Paris 2024

With the much-anticipated Paris 2024 Paralympic Games wrapped up, the Indian Paralympic team has returned home triumphantly, heralding their most successful performance to date. The contingent bagged 29 medals, of which seven were gold, marking a significant improvement from their previous record at the Tokyo Games, where they secured 19 medals. This exceptional haul not only showcased the athletes' grit and determination but also hinted at the growing support for para-sports within India.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi personally met with the para-athletes at his residence following their extraordinary feats. During the meet, he sat on the floor to receive the cap from Navdeep Singh, who clinched India’s last medal—a glorious gold—at the Games. This warm gesture reflected Modi's deep appreciation for the athletes’ hard work and their inspiring journeys.

Throughout the meeting, Modi celebrated the athletes' achievements, stating, "India's Paralympic champions have set a new benchmark with the highest-ever medal count. It was a delight to interact with them." This sentiment was echoed by the Paralympic Committee of India (PCI) president, Devendra Jhajharia, who has his own impressive record of three medals, including two golds. Jhajharia expressed confidence for the future, pledging the athletes' commitment to bring home even more medals at the upcoming 2028 Paralympics.

"We have started preparing for the next Paralympics, and I promise on behalf of the athletes, we will win at least 40 to 50 medals," he declared, highlighting the momentum the Indian para-athletes have gained.

Before achieving gold, Navdeep Singh had to endure the rollercoaster of emotions associated with his silver medal victory, which was later upgraded when his competitor from Iran was disqualified. This twist of fate not only propelled him to gold but also added to India's astonishing medal tally.

On the financial front, the Indian government recognized the athletes' hard work with substantial cash rewards. Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya announced INR 75 lakh for each gold medalist, INR 50 lakh for silver, and INR 30 lakh for bronze winners. Mandaviya reiterated the government’s commitment to supporting para-athletes as they gear up for future competitions.

India's rise on the Paralympic stage reflects years of improving infrastructure and increased funding for para-sports. From just one medal at the 2008 Beijing Games to four medals at Rio 2016, and now 29 at Paris, it is clear there has been substantial progress. The recent achievements indicate not just individual talent, but also supportive frameworks and ever-growing public engagement with para-athletics.

Despite their successes, many believe India still has miles to go if it aims to compete consistently against powerhouses like China, Great Britain, and the United States. Nonetheless, there’s no denying the positive shift in attitudes and the budding support for para-sports within the nation.

The Paris Games not only showcased the incredible talents of Indian athletes but also served as inspiration, urging society to reevaluate perspectives on disability and inclusion. This success story is more than just accolades—it's about overcoming barriers, both physically and socially, for athletes who often compete against overwhelming odds.

Looking forward, as fans and supporters rally behind these athletes, the Indian Paralympic team's achievements stand as proof of their tenacity and spirit, promising even greater accomplishments on the horizon as they prepare for Los Angeles 2028.
