Indian Films Shine On Oscars 2025 Shortlist

Anuja and All We Imagine as Light receive nominations, showcasing India’s cinematic talent.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has unveiled the shortlist for the 97th Oscars, marking another milestone for Indian cinema, especially with the nomination of Anuja for the Live Action Short category. This notable achievement is courtesy of Guneet Monga, the executive producer of the film, who is celebrated for her contributions to the industry.

On December 21, 2024, the announcement brought excitement for Monga, who has won Oscars twice before. Her involvement with Anuja signifies not only personal success but also highlights the increasing recognition of Indian talents on the global stage. The short film delves deep, showcasing compelling narratives reflective of contemporary societal issues.

While Anuja shines, another Indian film, All We Imagine as Light, will also carve its own path at the Oscars. Although it missed out on being India’s official entry for best international feature, co-producer Slideshow confirmed the film would compete independently across all categories, including best picture, director, and best original screenplay.

This debut feature by Payal Kapadia has garnered significant acclaim. After premiering at the 2024 Cannes International Film Festival, where it secured the prestigious Grand Prix award, the film has earned accolades from various cinematic circles. Its narrative centers on the lives of three working women grappling with societal pressures and personal dilemmas, quintessential themes reflective of modern India.

Chosen as India’s candidate for the Oscars was Laapataa Ladies, directed by Kiran Rao. While it sheds light on patriarchy within rural India, Rao’s film unfortunately did not make it to the Academy shortlist announced this week. The distinction of All We Imagine as Light becomes more pronounced as it stands out independently, reflecting the film's depth and unique storytelling style.

Besides winning at Cannes, All We Imagine as Light has also secured the title of best international film at the Florida Film Critics Circle and has earned two nominations at the London Film Critics’ Circle Awards—Best Foreign Language Film and Best Film of the Year. These accolades highlight the film's impactful storytelling and capability to resonate with broader audiences.

Set against the vibrant backdrop of Mumbai, the Malayalam-language drama features stellar performances from Kani Kusruti, Divya Prabha, Chhaya Kadam, Hridhu Haroon, and Azees Nedumangad. It intricately weaves through the emotional and societal challenges faced by the three protagonists. The film's narrative poignantly explores the intersection of their lives as they seek solace during transformative experiences.

For example, nurse Prabha, played by Kani Kusruti, confronts her past when she receives a surprising gift from her estranged husband. Meanwhile, her roommate Anu, portrayed by Divya Prabha, finds herself yearning for personal freedom as she navigates her relationship with a Muslim man, played by Hridhu Haroon. This quest for identity and belonging culminates during a trip to a coastal town, showcasing the struggles and triumphs shared by women within the Indian societal framework.

With these two films representing India at the Academy, there’s a palpable sense of pride and anticipation within the film community. Guneet Monga’s achievements with Anuja and Payal Kapadia’s promising recognition of All We Imagine as Light serve as testaments to the powerful narratives emanated from Indian filmmakers.

The increasing accolades and nominations highlight not only individual successes but also signify the collective advancement of Indian stories on international platforms. Filmmakers are breaking barriers and bridging cultural divides, allowing the world to glimpse the intricacies of Indian life through cinema.

These Oscar nominations reinforce the idea of storytelling as not just entertainment but as significant cultural discourse. Monga and Kapadia, through their compelling works, are equipping audiences with fresh perspectives and insightful narratives. The road to the 97th Oscars may be competitive, but with talents like Monga and Kapadia leading the way, Indian cinema is undoubtedly marking its territory on the global map.
