Tensions in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) have escalated significantly following a series of military actions and retaliatory measures in the region. On May 7, 2025, India conducted precision strikes targeting nine terrorist camps in both Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir, responding to the deadly April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam that had claimed the lives of 26 people, primarily tourists. The Indian Ministry of Defence (MoD) described the operation, named ‘Operation Sindoor,’ as focused and measured, emphasizing that no Pakistani military facilities were targeted during the strikes.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh expressed support for the operation on social media, declaring, "Bharat Mata ki Jai," while Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath praised the Indian Army with a post stating, "Jai Hind! Jai Hind Ki Sena!" In the aftermath of these strikes, Pakistan responded by violating the ceasefire agreement, firing artillery in the Bhimber Gali area of J&K just hours after the Indian operation.
The ongoing situation has led to heightened security measures across J&K. Following the strikes, all schools and colleges in five border districts, including Jammu, Samba, Kathua, Rajouri, and Poonch, were ordered to close for the day. The University of Kashmir also announced the cancellation of exams due to the prevailing tensions. Divisional Commissioner Ramesh Kumar confirmed the closures, stating that educational institutions would remain shut to ensure the safety of students.
In a related development, the Indian Army apprehended a Pakistani national near the Line of Control (LoC) in Poonch district’s Chakkan Da Bagh area on May 6, 2025. Details regarding the individual’s identity or the circumstances of the apprehension have not been disclosed, but officials indicated that questioning was underway.
As tensions have mounted, the Union Territory of J&K has also taken steps to restrict the use of virtual private networks (VPNs) in Doda district, citing concerns over public safety and cybersecurity. An order issued by District Magistrate Harvinder Singh noted that VPNs were being misused to bypass lawful cyber restrictions, posing a threat to public order and national security.
The situation along the LoC has deteriorated, with reports of unprovoked firing and shelling by the Pakistan military. On the night of May 6, three civilians were killed due to indiscriminate shelling, including a woman in the Mankote area of Poonch district, whose home was struck by a mortar shell. Her 13-year-old daughter was injured in the incident. Additionally, nine other civilians were reported injured across various sectors of Poonch, although all were said to be in stable condition.
This marked the 13th consecutive night of unprovoked firing along the borders, escalating fears among local residents. Since the April 22 terror attack, which also saw the death of one Nepali citizen, ceasefire violations have surged, with Pakistani troops extending their firing to multiple sectors along the LoC. This escalation began shortly after India suspended the Indus Waters Treaty in response to the attack, a move that has further strained relations between the two nations.
Before the recent violence, ceasefire violations had been relatively rare since both countries renewed their ceasefire agreement on February 25, 2021. However, the renewed hostilities have raised alarms and prompted calls for increased vigilance and safety measures among civilians.
In light of these developments, the Union Home Ministry has directed states and Union Territories to conduct mock drills on May 7, 2025, to prepare civilians for potential aerial attacks. Schools in Jammu district participated in these drills, instructing students on safety protocols, including how to take cover during an attack.
As the situation continues to evolve, both the Indian government and military are under pressure to respond effectively to the ongoing threats while ensuring the safety of civilians in the region. The recent military actions and subsequent responses reflect a complex and volatile situation that has significant implications for security and stability in Jammu and Kashmir.
With tensions running high, the international community is closely watching the developments in the region. The potential for further escalation remains a concern, as both nations navigate the delicate balance between military action and diplomatic engagement. The coming days will be critical in determining how the situation unfolds and whether measures can be taken to de-escalate the ongoing conflict.
