India Sees Electric Vehicle Surge Driving Sustainable Growth

Collaborations and initiatives aim to reshape transportation and environment across urban India

India is rapidly solidifying its position as a front-runner in the global push for electric vehicles (EVs), with several key initiatives and partnerships emanATING across various sectors. The country’s ambition to become the world’s largest EV manufacturer is not just about reducing emissions; it’s also about reshaping the transportation ecosystem, enhancing energy security, and stimulating economic growth.

Collaboration is at the heart of many of these advances. A notable example is the partnership between ARC Electric and Aon plc, established to facilitate sustainable employee transportation solutions. According to Abhinav Kalia, the founder and CEO of ARC Electric, this venture is indicative of the increasing willingness of corporations to adopt eco-friendly practices. From January to March 2024, the initiative saw ARC supply EV cabs covering approximately 80,000 kilometers, leading to the reduction of roughly 12,000 kilograms of CO2 emissions—an achievement comparable to saving 462 trees. This negative impact on the environment highlights how corporate strategies are increasingly aligning with environmental goals.

At the same time, Udaan E Vehicles is making community-focused strides with its CSR initiative, channeling ₹50 lakhs (about $60,000) to distribute 20 premium e-rickshaws aimed at enhancing mobility for the elderly and disabled. This approach not only provides local transportation options but also pivots on enhancing quality of life for people who often find themselves marginalized.

Meanwhile, OHM Global Mobility, the electric mobility division of Ashok Leyland, is set to expand its footprint with the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) of Chennai. The recent order for 500 ultra-low floor electric buses signifies not just growth for OHM, but also reflects the need for public transport sustainability amid urban congestion. These solutions are equipped with advanced technology and safety features, featuring non-air-conditioned and air-conditioned variants to cater to diverse passenger needs. The Mark II model buses are part of the fleet, configured to cover more than 200 kilometers on single electric charge, thereby setting the stage for integrated, green public transport.

Expressing ambitious projections, Amitabh Kant, G20 Sherpa and former CEO of NITI Aayog, emphasized the urgency for India to establish itself as the leading EV manufacturer. He noted, "If we don’t shift now, we risk missing the opportunity to become the world's largest EV manufacturer." The government-backed 7C vision—focusing on common, connected, convenient, congestion-free, charged, clean, and cutting-edge mobility—serves as the foundation for these plans. Under this directive, Ashim Sharma from NRI anticipates vehicle penetration to achieve 12%-15% by 2030. According to him, this paves the way for India to align itself with major markets such as the US, Europe, and China.

For electric mobility to flourish, comprehensive infrastructure development is urgent. Charging stations, the backbone of any EV ecosystem, are being strategically planned at multiple depots, particularly highlighted by the planned installations across key Chennai locations such as Perumbur and KK Nagar to support the operation of its new fleet.

Government initiatives are equally ambitious and multifaceted. The Indian EV market, anticipated to capture 30% of the share by 2030, is set for substantial growth, projected to see the EV battery market surge from USD 16.77 billion this year to USD 27.70 billion by 2028. The combination of favourable policies, combined with investment for public transport systems, places India on track for transformative growth.

Further supporting these developments, companies like Yuma Energy have emerged, launching battery swapping services across Uttar Pradesh, which can efficiently address the energy needs of e-rickshaws and bicycles. This aligns perfectly with the nation’s vision of environmentally responsible mobility, yielding faster refill times and minimal downtime. Not only does this provide immediate access to energy, but it also supports the flexible operational habits often necessary for fleet management.

Also noteworthy is how traditional automotive manufacturers are transitioning to renewables. The growing market for EV components also presents opportunities for local enterprises to contribute to the broader green supply chain. By investing and innovatively adapting their operations toward sustainability, OEMs (original equipment manufacturers) are setting examples for future sustainability practices.

The move toward electric vehicles also goes hand-in-hand with social responsibility. Udaan E Vehicles, for example, aims to promote financial inclusion and improve accessibility by offering e-rickshaw services to underserved populations, underlining the connection between equity and sustainable development.

Ironically, alongside the good news of partnerships and orders lies the overarching need for collective action among various stakeholders. Whether through public-private partnerships, governmental support, investment or consumer adoption, the realization of EV potential rests on collaboration. Industries must unite to create comprehensive strategies focused on shared objectives like reducing emissions and creating sustainable urban infrastructures.

Looking forward, India's electric vehicle narrative is not just depicted through increased sales numbers but instead extends to holistic engagements with communities. The innovative approaches exhibited by companies such as ARC Electric, Udaan E Vehicles, and OHM Mobility indicate the power of collaboration. These initiatives showcase India's broader vision for not just transitioning to electric vehicles, but forging pathways for inclusive, sustainable growth. By aligning sustainability with innovation and community welfare, India is poised to trailblaze its EV ambition, leading the global charge toward sustainable transportation.
