India Faces Varied Weather Patterns As Monsoon Approaches

As Delhi-NCR enjoys a respite from heat, eastern states brace for heatwaves and storms ahead of early monsoon.

As the weather across India shifts dramatically, residents of Delhi-NCR are currently enjoying a welcome respite from the heat. With temperatures hovering between 25°C and 35°C, many are finding relief as light rains fell in various areas on Saturday, May 10, 2025. The minimum temperature recorded today was 25.8°C, slightly below the normal average by 0.7°C. According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), this cooling trend is expected to last for the next two days before temperatures start to rise again.

However, the situation is starkly different in eastern India, where a heatwave alert has been issued for several states, including Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, and parts of Uttar Pradesh. The IMD forecasts that from May 11 to May 15, these regions will experience hot winds and a significant increase in temperatures. In West Bengal and Sikkim, heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms is predicted until May 14, 2025.

In its latest updates, the IMD has also made an important announcement regarding the southwest monsoon, which is expected to make its debut in Kerala on May 27, 2025, ahead of the usual date of June 1. If this prediction holds true, it will mark the earliest arrival of the monsoon since 2009, a hopeful sign for many across the country.

Meanwhile, in Uttar Pradesh, cities like Lucknow are already feeling the effects of the sun, with a forecasted increase in temperatures after May 11. The weather department predicts that, while the next 24 hours will see little change, a rise of 4 to 6 degrees Celsius is likely shortly thereafter.

In Uttarakhand, a mixed weather pattern is unfolding, with rain in the mountainous regions and heat in the plains. The Meteorological Science Center in Dehradun has issued a yellow alert for thunderstorms in seven districts, while six districts are warned of lightning and hail. Dr. Vikram Singh, director of the center, indicated that the weather is expected to normalize by May 12.

In Rajasthan, light to moderate rainfall has been recorded due to western disturbances, with Nimbaheda in Chittorgarh reporting the highest rainfall of 43 mm. However, the weather department warns that rainfall will decrease after May 12-13, leading to a temperature increase of 3 to 5 degrees.

As for Bihar, light rain is anticipated in Patna and surrounding areas on May 10, with a heatwave expected in eight districts the following day. The weather will remain hot and dry, with maximum temperatures rising by 3 to 5 degrees Celsius, intensifying the heat for residents.

In Kannauj, Uttar Pradesh, a sudden change in weather occurred on May 10, with rain providing relief from the heat. The weather department predicts a minimum temperature of around 27 degrees tonight, with cloudy skies expected to persist.

Overall, the weather across the country is highly variable. While Delhi and northern regions are experiencing pleasant weather, the eastern states are bracing for a heatwave. The anticipated early arrival of the monsoon brings a glimmer of hope for those looking forward to the cooling rains.

As the weather continues to fluctuate, residents are advised to stay updated on forecasts and prepare for the varying conditions. With the IMD's predictions, it seems that while some areas may soon face rising temperatures, others will enjoy the benefits of timely rains and cooler weather.
