India Faces Crisis Of Elder Abandonment In Aging Society

Rising elder abandonment reveals cultural shifts and urgent need for support structures in India

As India enters a new demographic era characterized by rapid aging, social issues surrounding the care of elderly citizens have surfaced, revealing a poignant crisis that juxtaposes the nation’s rich cultural heritage emphasizing familial care against harsh realities.

In cities like Garhmukteshwar, heartbreaking stories of abandonment unfold daily. Many elderly individuals are discovered in gutters, abandoned in hospitals, or left to fend for themselves on the streets. The narrative of Amirchand Sharma, a retired policeman, exemplifies this distressing trend. After suffering severe injuries in an accident, his sons left him to die by the river, uttering the cold words, "Taking care of him is not our cup of tea. They said, ‘Throw him away.’" This chilling incident is not an isolated one; it mirrors a pervasive and growing issue as India’s population ages.

Traditionally, Indian society has deeply ingrained cultural expectations that children should care for their aging parents. However, the dynamics of familial relationships are fracturing under the weight of modernization and urbanization. As younger generations relocate to cities for better opportunities, the customary multigenerational homes that once housed grandparents, parents, and children are becoming rarer. The increasing lifespan of older adults, while a sign of progress, presents significant caregiving challenges.

The cultural fabric that once tightly woven families together now faces strain as the generations grapple with the difficulties of financial stability and accommodating health needs. Courtrooms across the country are filled with cases wherein parents are seeking support from their estranged children. Meanwhile, the streets throng with seniors whose only refuge has become public spaces.

Nonprofit organizations, like the Saint Hardyal Educational and Orphans Welfare Society (SHEOWS), are stepping in to fill the growing void. With sprawling shelters that house nearly 320 abandoned elderly individuals, these organizations are proving essential in combating the fallout of this societal shift. Residents at SHEOWS tell stories of being cast aside or forced to leave by children unable or unwilling to provide care.

Baltazar, a former chef who became blind and was subsequently abandoned by his wife and children, is another story that resonates within the walls of SHEOWS. His sons, who assured him they would return after consulting doctors, vanished without a trace. Baltazar’s painful realization of abandonment led him to contemplate the duty of love and responsibility he once imparted to them. "Isn’t it their duty to take care of me?" he cries.

The stark reality for many elderly citizens in India is that facilities like SHEOWS may be their last hope. Each day, dedicated staff members navigate the complex realities these individuals face, often witnessing the profound impact of fragmentation in familial bonds. They handle cases of dementia, cruelty, and neglect, often reflecting broader societal issues, such as poverty and mental illness.

Driving through the crowded streets of New Delhi, teams from SHEOWS meticulously survey the terrain for those in need, often confronting the sobering sight of the elderly left to suffer. Ambulance drivers like Rinku Semar approach vulnerable individuals with care, hoping to offer assistance. "Do you have a son? Do you have a daughter?" they inquire gently.

Many refuse their help, locked in reluctance born from fear of further abandonment or the disdain from those who turned their backs on them. Others exhibit signs of mental and physical decline, which complicate the decision to accept aid. These encounters reveal the stark truth that many seniors endure their twilight years in solitude instead of surrounded by the comfort of family.

At SHEOWS, as caregivers tend to the needs of the abandoned, they become a substitute family. Their compassion nurtures a semblance of warmth that many of these individuals have been deprived of. However, the inevitable reminders of what they have lost linger in every conversation. The trauma of abandonment reshapes their identities, but the resilience shown by both staff and residents fosters an environment of empathy and healing.

Shushila Jain, an elderly resident of SHEOWS, believes the world is currently experiencing Kali Yuga, a period of chaos and conflict according to Hindu tradition. Her life reflects the turmoil of an age where love and familial bonds have given way to neglect and loss. Yet, in the shelter, the spirit of community shines through. Residents share meals, stories, and laughter amidst lingering pain, forging connections that echo the relationships they wish they could revive.

As India grapples with an aging populace, it faces a critical juncture. The manner in which society responds to its elderly—an often-overlooked segment—will impact the social fabric for generations to come. While the abandonment of elders serves as stark evidence of a cultural shift, the presence of shelters and charitable organizations points to an emerging consciousness seeking change and preservation of dignity for senior citizens.

The challenge lies in bridging the disconnection between traditional expectations and modern realities. As the older generation navigates abandonment and loss, their voices call for a reconsideration of how society honors and cares for those who came before. Each story of abandonment serves not only as a cry for help but also as a reminder of the responsibilities that come with love and familial ties.

In this new era, ensuring that elders never feel discarded must become a shared goal. With collective effort, narratives of neglect can be rewritten, transforming the stories of abandonment into tales of care and connection, ensuring a better future for all generations.
