Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia recently highlighted this ambition during the inauguration of Cisco's new manufacturing unit located in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu. This facility is expected to produce advanced Network Convergence System routers, which are not only meant for domestic consumption but also targeted for export to countries like Mexico, Japan, Australia, the Netherlands, and the United States. Scindia remarked on the ambition, stating, "Telecom transformation, technological triumph. On our mission to make India the global telecom manufacturing hub." This initiative is part of the broader vision to leverage India's potential as a center for high-tech manufacturing.
Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India has seen dramatic growth within its mobile phone production sector, exporting mobile devices worth Rs 1.28 lakh crore. Scindia mentioned this evolution, comparing the past when India primarily imported mobile phones (only about Rs 1,500 crore worth) to today, where the country stands as the second-largest mobile phone producer globally, with production reaching 300 million units annually. He underscored how the value addition to mobile phones has jumped by 20 percent, thanks largely to new foreign direct investment (FDI) norms.
With $39 billion secured as FDI, Scindia is optimistic about replicative success within the telecom equipment manufacturing sphere. India has achieved the fastest rollout of 5G technology, covering 98 percent of its cities, indicating the significant advancements being made across the telecom sector.
During his visit to the Nokia Solutions & Networks campus in Chennai, Scindia witnessed how Industry 4.0 technologies are driving innovations within telecom manufacturing. This visit allowed for demonstrations of cutting-edge technologies, including private wireless solutions and applications of artificial intelligence (AI), augmented, and virtual reality (AR/VR). The minister praised Nokia for its commitment to establishing world-class manufacturing facilities, affirming this effort as aligned with India’s mission to become a global telecom manufacturing hub.
