The Washington State Senate recently passed a resolution to celebrate the impactful contributions of Indian Americans to the state’s vibrant culture and history. Sponsored by Senator Manka Dhingra, the resolution acknowledges the presence and influence of over 100,000 Indian Americans residing in Washington. Dhingra, who made history as the first Sikh American elected to any state legislature across the United States, emphasized the foundational democratic values shared between India and the U.S. during her speech at the Senate floor.
“Indian Americans enrich every facet of our society — from the classroom to the boardroom,” Dhingra stated. She urged there should be continued efforts to uphold the values fundamental to both democracies, especially on this day honoring India's adoption of its constitution. The event included prayers by Mustafa Mohamedali of the Islamic Center of Olympia and Karandeep Singh from the Khalsa Gurmat Center, illustrating the inclusivity of the celebrations. During the ceremony, the Ambassador of India to Ukraine, Ravi Shankar, highlighted the importance of Republic Day, marking January 26, 1950, as pivotal for India’s evolution as a sovereign, independent democratic republic. Shankar stressed the aspirations and accomplishments achieved by India over the past 75 years, including its economic growth, which positions it as one of the fastest-growing economies poised to become the third largest globally.
“Bold reforms, investments in infrastructure and innovations such as quantum technologies, artificial intelligence, and space exploration make our country a key player in global processes,” Shankar noted. He also pointed out significant humanitarian efforts directed at Ukraine, reflecting India’s commitment to aiding its partners on the ground through initiatives like sending mobile hospitals dubbed “BHISHM Cubes” and financing projects like the modernization of surgical departments at local hospitals.
The Ambassador also marked the significance of building on cultural exchanges, noting the rising interest among Ukrainians toward Indian culture, language, and traditions. He expressed gratitude to Ukrainian students engaging with Hindi studies and promised more academic opportunities through signed programs aimed at enriching mutual cultural heritage.
