India Celebrates Constitution Day With Presidential Address

President Droupadi Murmu highlights constitutional values on 75th anniversary

The President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu, took center stage on November 26, 2024, to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the nation’s Constitution during the observance of ‘Samvidhan Divas’ at the Central Hall of Parliament House. This day marks not just the adoption of the Constitution but the culmination of nearly three years of diligent efforts by some of India's finest minds; all aimed at forging the foundational document of a newly independent nation. Today, as she addressed the audience, President Murmu reaffirmed, "Our Constitution is the strong foundation stone of our democratic republic. Our Constitution ensures our collective and individual dignity."

“On completing the 75 years of Independence, all the citizens celebrated 'Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav',” she added, emphasizing the cultural significance of this year’s events. "On January 26 of next year, we will also celebrate the 75th anniversary of our Republic. Such celebrations provide us with opportunities to take stock of the past and to chart our path forward. They strengthen our unity and highlight our collective commitment to achieving national goals."

Tracing back to the heart of democratic values, the President began by honoring the members of the Constituent Assembly, particularly remembering the significant roles of Dr. Rajendra Prasad and Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. She expressed gratitude, stating, "It is the good fortune of the country to have had leaders like them guide the process of constitution-making. Babasaheb Ambedkar's progressive and inclusive vision is embedded within our Constitution. His insights remind us of our long-standing legacy as the 'Mother of Democracy'".

The gravitas of the day's celebration also served as a poignant moment to acknowledge the contributions of the fifteen women members of the Constituent Assembly, whose presence and efforts were instrumental during the nation’s formative years.

Reflecting on the historical backdrop, the President elaborated on how India’s Constitution stands as the embodiment of many intellectual debates and the nation’s struggle for independence. She highlighted the values encapsulated succinctly within the Preamble: justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity, declaring them as ideals universally recognized and respected by the citizens of India.

Echoing the sentiments of inter-institutional cooperation, she reiterated, "It is the responsibility of the Executive, Legislature, and Judiciary to collectively uplift the lives of common people. The aspirations of the populace have been expressed through various legislations. Recently, major initiatives, including the implementation of the ‘Goods and Services Tax’ and granting Constitutional status to the ‘National Commission for Backward Classes’, have propelled our progress forward."

According to President Murmu, the promotion of women-led development embodies the essence of the constitutional ideal of social justice. She proudly noted the introduction of the ‘Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam’, marking what she deemed as the beginning of a new era for women’s empowerment within Indian governance. The President complimented the Parliament for assuming bold initiatives, which she asserted demonstrated modern thinking, exemplified by the passage of new laws transforming the justice system.

Looking to the horizon, the President articulated her vision for grassroots changes afforded by the Constitution. "Our government's policies aim to uplift every segment of society, particularly the marginalized and economically deprived. Initiatives are being implemented so the underprivileged gain access to their own homes, basic healthcare services, and world-class infrastructure. These impactful measures propel our constitutional aspirations."

The President also shed light on the noteworthy advancements within India's judiciary. "The importance of judicial reforms cannot be understated, and through the efforts of the Supreme Court, we are currently undertaking initiatives to address issues faced by undertrial prisoners, enhancing the effectiveness of our judicial mechanisms," she said. The increasing awareness surrounding the importance of Fundamental Rights emphasizes the ever-evolving nature of India’s legal framework.

Further reinforcing the importance of civic duty, President Murmu emphasized the roles of citizens laid out within the Constitution: “Protecting the unity and integrity of India, promoting societal harmony, ensuring the dignity of women, safeguarding public property, and working toward national success, all fall within our Fundamental Duties."

Marking the Constitution as "a living and progressive document," she reminded the audience of the foresight demonstrated by the Constitution-makers who established methodologies for adaptation alongside changing societal needs. Through these proactive measures, India aims to honor its commitment to international peace and security as well as economic leadership within the global arena—strongly referred to by the President as ‘Vishwa-Bandhu’."

President Murmu concluded her address with optimism, stating, “The Constitutional ideals get strength from the commitment of each citizen. The celebrations of ‘Samvidhan Divas’ since 2015 have helped raise awareness of our Constitution among the youth. This trend eschews despair, rooting for hope and conviction among the younger generations. I urge citizens to not only embrace these ideals but to embody them, striving toward the ambitious national goal of achieving 'Viksit Bharat' by the year 2047 every single day." She extended her congratulations and heartfelt wishes to all on this esteemed occasion, signing off with, "Thank you, Jai Hind! Jai Bharat!"
