Inclement Weather Closes Schools Across Regions

Severe snow and freezing rain lead to widespread cancellations and safety advisories

On February 6, 2025, inclement weather swept across Canada and parts of the U.S., leading to numerous school closures and significant transportation disruptions. Various regions grappled with heavy snowfall and freezing rain, prompting school districts to take precautionary measures to safeguard students and staff.

Across Manitoba, several school divisions announced closures. The Brandon School Division, for example, closed Alexander, O’Kelly, and Spring Valley Schools, along with other divisions like the Lake Shore and Prairie Spirit School Divisions. According to the Brandon School Division, "Buses were not operating outside the city of Brandon." Other districts affected include DSFM with closures at École La Source and École Notre-Dame-de-Lourdes, as well as the Rolling River and Southwest Horizon School Divisions, highlighting the widespread impact of the weather.

Meanwhile, the Fraser Valley region of British Columbia faced its own challenges. The Mission School District suspended all public school operations, with officials noting, "public schools in Mission are closed on Thursday, and no in-person classes are taking place." Snowfall accumulated heavily, leaving drivers with slippery conditions on Highway 1 as traffic reports indicated hazardous driving conditions. Traffic Anchor Ryan Lidemark described the situation, stating, "Some dicey conditions on the roads south of the Fraser..."

“It has been quite the morning here,” added 1130 Meteorologist Michael Kuss. He explained, "Two to five centimeters of snow fell across many neighborhoods," indicating the challenging conditions faced by residents.

Further east, the District School Board of Niagara announced the closure of all its schools due to adverse weather conditions. Officials cited freezing rain as the primary concern, stating, "This decision was made out of an abundance of caution for keeping our school communities and staff safe." The closures extended to daycares and children's centers, with the Niagara Children’s Centre also shutting its doors.

Hamilton was similarly affected, with both public and Catholic schools closing due to freezing rain advisories. The advisory issued by Environment Canada warned, "Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways, and parking lots may become icy and slippery." This prompted authorities to prioritize student safety, resulting in multiple educational institutions halting operations.

Transportation was also heavily impacted, particularly for Toronto and surrounding areas. On February 7, 2025, Durham Student Transportation Services reported cancellations for buses across several zones due to adverse road conditions from the continuing winter weather. Despite these cancellations, the Durham District School Board and the Durham Catholic District School Board kept schools open, illustrating the varying levels of impact across regions.

Weather experts continue to closely monitor the conditions as frigid temperatures are anticipated to persist, resulting in potentially hazardous travel conditions for Friday, February 8. Local authorities urge residents to exercise caution, particularly during early commutes the following morning.

The inclement weather has significantly affected life across multiple regions, emphasizing the importance of community safety. Many families have adjusted their routines as schools across various provinces remain closed or operate on delayed schedules.

With winter still quite gripping many regions, the forecast suggests continued fluctuations with more snow and freezing temperatures looming. Observers anticipate updates from meteorological services and local governing bodies will provide guidance, keeping residents informed.

For those traveling, the advice remains sturdy: brace for icy patches and heed warnings from local traffic authorities. The current weather event serves as a clear reminder of nature's unpredictable impact, underscoring the significance of preparedness and caution during these winter months.
