Illinois Fighting Illini Fall To Nebraska Cornhuskers

Cornhuskers snap skid against Illini with dramatic overtime win

LINCOLN, Neb. — The Illinois Fighting Illini faced the Nebraska Cornhuskers at Pinnacle Bank Arena on January 30, 2025, hoping to solidify their standing for March Madness. Ranked No. 18, Illinois entered the game with pressure, having to improve their 14-6 record.

This matchup proved significant for both teams; Illinois was vying for contention, needing to recover from setbacks, whereas Nebraska, struggling with six consecutive losses, aimed to find redemption at home.

From the tip-off, the game showcased Illinois' ability to battle back against adversity as they fought to erase early deficits. Unfortunately, the Illini struggled significantly from beyond the arc, shooting just 10-for-42 (23.8%) for the game. Their turnover issues compounded the struggle, with Illinois committing 17 turnovers throughout the contest, making it difficult to regain momentum.

Despite the obstacles, Illinois managed to tie the game at 70-70 late in the second half after Dra Gibbs-Lawhorn sank a three-pointer with 46 seconds left on the clock. This moment was pivotal and exemplified the resilience of the Illini, who had battled back from 12 points down.

On the other side, Nebraska rallied behind Brice Williams, who emerged as the star of the night. He scored a game-high 27 points, proving to be instrumental during overtime with six consecutive points, lifting his team to their first victory over Illinois since 2018.

The game concluded with Nebraska triumphing 80-74 after outlasting Illinois during the overtime period, ending their six-game losing streak and improving to 13-8 overall and 3-7 within the Big Ten Conference.

Illinois’ performance left much to be desired. They fell to 14-7 and dropped to 6-5 within the conference. Kasparas Jakucionis, leading the Illini with 18 points and 12 rebounds, acknowledged the night’s challenges: “We had our chances, but mistakes cost us,” he summarized after the game.

Reflecting on the game, head coach Brad Underwood commented on the team's potential when fully functional, stating, “Illinois are final four caliber when whole; our flaws were evident tonight.” Indeed, the absences, particularly of starting center Tomislav Ivisic due to illness, were significant.

For Nebraska, this victory was more than just numbers—it symbolized renewed hope. The atmosphere within Pinnacle Bank Arena was electric as fans celebrated ending their losing streak, igniting passion back for the Cornhuskers' season.

Next up for Illinois is their home game against Ohio State, which is scheduled for February 2, 2025. The Illini will need to regroup and channel the lessons learned from their narrow loss to remain competitive as the season progresses. Nebraska will also look to build on this success as they face challenges ahead, with confidence renewed after this dramatic win.

This thrilling game showcased not only the intensity of Big Ten basketball but also provided insights on how both teams must continue to evolve if they hope to make significant strides as the season heads toward March Madness.
