IAIN Parepare Explores Local Culture Through Historic Site Research

Students and faculty engage with Bujung Lapakkita and Saoraja Sawitto to promote cultural preservation and education.

On December 21, 2024, students and faculty from the Islamic Civilization History Study Program (SPI) at IAIN Parepare conducted impactful mini research activities at significant historic sites, including Bujung Lapakkita and Saoraja Sawitto, both located in Kabupaten Pinrang, Sulawesi Selatan. The primary aim of this initiative was to deepen the participants’ knowledge of local historical and cultural heritage.

Ahmad Yani, the Chair of SPI, emphasized the importance of integrating theory with practical fieldwork during these visits. This reflects the program's dedication to exploring and documenting historical sites rich with cultural significance.

The event at Bujung Lapakkita was warmly embraced by the local community, with Lasinrang, the site keeper, expressing gratitude for the attention being paid to the preservation of their historical site. He remarked, "Bujung Lapakkita menyimpan banyak cerita masa lalu, termasuk jejak-jejak penyebaran nilai budaya lokal. Kami berharap kegiatan ini dapat mendorong semangat pelestarian warisan budaya dan sejarah." Lasinrang’s comments highlighted not only the historical importance of the site but also its role as a cultural repository for the local populace.

Abdul Azis, representing the students, noted the immense value of this experience, stating, "Ini adalah kesempatan yang sangat berharga bagi kami untuk mendalami jejak sejarah di wilayah Pinrang. kami belajar secara langsung tentang pentingnya pelestarian situs bersejarah seperti Bujung Lapakkita." His enthusiasm reflects the educational advantage of engaging directly with historical landmarks and the rich narratives surrounding them.

Following their exploration of Bujung Lapakkita, the SPI students and faculty continued their educational visit to Saoraja Sawitto, another site steeped in history. Musyarif, one of the faculty members, explained the significance of Saoraja Sawitto, asserting, "Setiap sudut Saoraja menyimpan cerita yang dapat menghubungkan kita dengan akar budaya leluhur. Ini adalah wujud nyata dari kekayaan filosofi kehidupan masyarakat Bugis." His words serve to bridge the past with the present, emphasizing the need to recognize and uphold the values encapsulated within such sites.

Andi Bau Sawerigading, the site manager of Saoraja Sawitto, welcomed the SPI group, acknowledging their efforts to engage with local history. He stated, "Harapan kami, kunjungan seperti ini dapat memberikan wawasan baru tentang sejarah dan pentingnya Saoraja Sawitto sebagai bagian dari peradaban lokal yang sarat nilai Islam." His remarks underscored the aspirations for these visits to enrich the students' educational experiences and inform their cultural consciousness.

Through these research activities, IAIN Parepare's SPI program aims not just to educate its students but also to strengthen the bond between academia and the community. This hands-on approach fosters greater awareness and appreciation of cultural preservation among the younger generation. The enthusiasm demonstrated by the students during the activities symbolizes their commitment to safeguarding their heritage as they pursue future academic and professional endeavors.

With initiatives like these, IAIN Parepare's Program Studi Sejarah Peradaban Islam firmly establishes its commitment to nurturing generations who are cognizant of their historical and cultural roots. By focusing on sites like Bujung Lapakkita and Saoraja Sawitto, educators and students alike participate in the preservation of Indonesia's rich history, ensuring these treasures endure for future generations to learn and appreciate.
