I-65 North Closed After Multi-Vehicle Crash

Authorities working to investigate and clear the scene of the accident by late evening.

A multi-vehicle crash led to the closure of Interstate 65 North Tuesday evening, severely affecting traffic flow through Marshall and Giles counties. According to the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT), the incident occurred at mile marker 33 at approximately 6:30 p.m.

Erin Zeigler, regional communications officer for TDOT, took to social media to announce the shutdown of all lanes due to the crash. "All lanes will be closed due to a crash at mile marker 33," she said.

According to Zeigler, the scene would not be fully cleared until around 10 p.m. Tuesday evening, adding to the frustrations of drivers caught in the backup. "The scene will not be totally cleared until about 10 p.m.," she confirmed.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP) is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash. A spokesperson for the THP stated, "Troopers are continuing their investigation," indicating the seriousness of the incident and the need for thorough examination.

To assist stranded motorists and to alleviate congestion, authorities established detours at mile marker 32. Although specific details about the vehicles involved or potential injuries have yet to be released, the response from emergency services remains active, as they work to manage the situation.

This traffic incident occurred just as the evening rush hour was reaching its peak, which likely compounded delays across the interstate. Local commuters faced significant challenges finding alternate routes as news of the closure spread.

Officials have urged motorists to exercise patience and seek detours as the investigation and cleanup efforts continue. "Drive safely and be cautious of the traffic conditions along alternate routes," the TDOT reiterated.

Traffic conditions are typically hectic during the evening commute, and with the added pressure from news of the closure, many drivers found themselves stuck longer than anticipated. Those familiar with the area were reminded to monitor local traffic updates or check the TDOT SmartWay map for real-time information.
