Hyundai's Ioniq 9 Electric SUV Launches To Transform Family Travel

The all-new 2026 Ioniq 9 offers spacious interiors, impressive range, and cutting-edge technology as Hyundai's flagship electric SUV

Hyundai has officially unveiled the much-anticipated Ioniq 9 at the Los Angeles Auto Show, marking a significant milestone as the South Korean automotive giant introduces its first electric three-row SUV. Building on the success of its previous models, the Ioniq 9 promises to be both innovative and spacious, catering to families and EV enthusiasts alike.

With nearly two years of anticipation following Kia's launch of the EV9, the Ioniq 9 sets itself apart with bold curves and aerodynamic efficiency. This full-size SUV spans 199 inches with a generous 123-inch wheelbase, offering ample interior space for up to seven passengers. Its sleek design, characterized by deep body panels, prominent fenders, and distinctive 'parametric pixel' lighting, echoes previous Ioniq models yet delivers its unique identity.

Hyundai plans to offer the Ioniq 9 with three distinct drivetrain options: the Long Range rear-wheel drive with 215 horsepower, the Long Range all-wheel drive with 308 horsepower, and the Performance all-wheel drive model cranking out 428 horsepower. All variants are equipped with the same 110 kW battery pack, which enables the performance model to reach an impressive estimated range of 335 miles on a single charge, surpassing the EV9’s capabilities.

Performance enthusiasts will appreciate the dual-motor system of the Performance model, which enables rapid acceleration from 0 to 60 miles per hour in just 4.9 seconds. Not only is charging efficiency impressive—allowing rapid replenishment from 10% to 80% within 24 minutes at 350 kW charger stations—but the Ioniq 9 also welcomes the NACS charging port, allowing compatibility with Tesla Supercharger stations.

The interior of the Ioniq 9 is equally noteworthy, featuring a spacious cabin crafted for comfort. The design mirrors other new Hyundai models, integrating airy elements bolstered by high-quality materials. A flat floor is facilitated by Hyundai’s electric powertrain design, providing ample foot space and accessibility. Key interior highlights include dual 12.3-inch screens for the dashboard and infotainment system, along with additional features like USB-C ports populaging all three rows.

Innovative seating options include 'Relaxation Seats' with recline functionality and the potential for some models to feature second-row swiveling seats, allowing for social interaction among passengers. While the U.S. market may not see the swiveling option due to safety regulations, the luxury feel remains intact with premium materials and features throughout.

For cargo needs, the Ioniq 9 is promising too. With all three rows up, there’s about 22 cubic feet of luggage space, which expands to approximately 47 cubic feet when the third row is stowed. Folding all seats accommodates more than 80 cubic feet, exceeding even some competitors without compromising the overall sleek design of the vehicle.

Under the hood, Hyundai hasn't neglected sustainability. The Ioniq 9's interior upholstery utilizes eco-friendly materials like Eco Process Leather and recycled fabrics, marking the brand's commitment to environmentally conscious manufacturing. Further, paint made from recycled tire waste adds to the car's eco-credentials.

Even the vehicle's exterior reflects advanced engineering. The Ioniq 9 promises not only to deliver on aesthetics but also maximum efficiency, thanks to its optimized aerodynamics and new active air flap technology—a first for Hyundai. This design philosophy showcases Hyundai's intention to lead with innovation and style.

The Ioniq 9 will commence its sales campaign with expected pricing slightly higher than the base of the Kia EV9, currently set at $54,900. Anticipated availability will be targeted for the first half of 2025, with full downside on specifications and features to be confirmed as the launch date approaches. The new model is also expected to remain eligible for federal tax credits, which could make it even more appealing to potential buyers.

Hyundai's new flagship electric vehicle, the Ioniq 9, showcases the vehicle manufacturer's resolve to compete vigorously within the ever-expanding electric vehicle market. This spacious, high-tech SUV blends efficiency with luxury, providing consumers with viable alternatives to traditional combustion engine vehicles. The anticipation surrounding its launch highlights the changing automotive narrative where spacious family-friendly vehicles can also be environmentally responsible and tech-savvy.
