HV71 Triumphs Over Frölunda HC As Rönnberg Hits Milestone

Olof Glifford's impressive saves lead to victory amid dignified farewell for coach Roger Rönnberg.

Frölunda HC faced off against HV71 at the iconic Scandinavium arena, where HV71 emerged victorious with a score of 4-2. This match was pivotal not only for the standings but also served as man of the moment Olof Glifford showcased his talents as the young star goalkeeper.

Olof Glifford, at just 19 years old, stood firm against Frölunda's advances, making 33 saves throughout the game. This performance marked Glifford's fifth career match and yet another victory, helping HV71 pull away from the bottom of the table. After the game, Glifford stated, "I think I read the game well throughout. They create good chances, but I tried to stay calm. I don’t think they screen me either" (Original quote in Swedish: "Jag tycker jag läser spelet bra, matchen igenom. De skapar bra lägen men jag försökte hålla mig lugn. Jag tycker inte att de skymmer mig heller."). His composed demeanor under pressure was evident to spectators and coaches alike, solidifying his role as one to watch in the future.

On the opposite bench, Frölunda's coach Roger Rönnberg experienced mixed emotions during the match. Despite the loss, Rönnberg reached the remarkable milestone of 769 SHL matches coached, the highest number ever recorded. Reflecting on this achievement, Anton Blomqvist, the head coach of HV71, noted, "I am aware Roger is upset, but 769 matches, the most in the league's history, is very impressive. Roger has meant very much to Swedish hockey and will continue to do so," showcasing the high regard Rönnberg holds within the sport.

Responding to the praise, Rönnberg maintained his sense of humor, quipping back at Blomqvist, "Thank you for the nice words, Anton. I'm not as impressed with the Roger today. No genius today” (Original quote in Swedish: "Tack för de fina orden, Anton. Jag är inte lika imponerad över den där Roger idag. Ingen geni idag."). Such banter highlighted the strong camaraderie and respect among coaches, even rivaling during intense matches.

Rönnberg, who has guided Frölunda to two championships and four CHL titles, confirmed he would be leaving SHL after this season, taking his talents to Fribourg Gotteron, the Swiss league team. His departure marks the end of an era for Frölunda and SHL alike, as they bid farewell to one of the league’s distinguished figures.

While the night was filled with highs and lows, one thing stood clear: young Olof Glifford has undoubtedly made his mark, aiding HV71 not solely with the win but showcasing the bright future he could have. Similarly, Roger Rönnberg's 769 matches were celebrated even amid frustration on the rink, representing years of dedication and accomplishment.

This exciting encounter between Frölunda HC and HV71 not only illustrated the competitive spirit of the SHL but also gave fans memorable moments to cherish as they both look forward to the rest of the season.
