Husband's Domestic Abuse Report Preceded Harshita Brella's Murder

An investigation reveals police failures as family seeks justice for slain daughter

The tragic story of Harshita Brella, 24, has emerged as yet another case highlighting the urgent issue of domestic abuse and the many failures within law enforcement. Brella was found dead on November 14, 2024, inside the boot of a silver Vauxhall Corsa parked on Brisbane Road, Ilford, East London. Her husband, Pankaj Lamba, aged 23, is the prime suspect and has since become the target of an international manhunt after allegedly fleeing the country following her death.

This horrifying incident did not come out of nowhere. Just weeks prior to her murder, Brella had reported Lamba to the police for domestic abuse. On September 3, he was arrested after she filed her complaint, but he was soon released on bail with conditions and issued with a domestic violence protection notice. This series of events raises serious questions about how effectively police responded to Brella’s cries for help.

According to Derrick Campbell, regional director of the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), their organization is currently investigating Northamptonshire Police's contact with Brella and Lamba before the young woman's body was discovered. Campbell stated, “We will be examining the police response to Ms. Brella’s report of domestic abuse made at the end of August this year. Our investigation will also look at any subsequent contact the police had with Ms. Brella concerning the case.”

Brella had initially reported her husband’s abusive behavior to authorities on August 29, 2024, prompting the police to take action. They quickly arrested Lamba, but he was released on bail conditions just four days later. The IOPC’s investigation will focus on whether the police’s handling of the situation was adequate and if they properly supported Brella during her time of need.

Detectives suspect Brella was killed on November 10, shortly before her body was transported to Ilford. The initial investigation revealed signs of strangulation as the cause of death, which marked this incident as not just tragic but also alarmingly brutal.

The search for Lamba has garnered significant media attention, with authorities warning he is considered dangerous. He is believed to have fled the country, and police have issued multiple appeals for information from the public, especially anyone who might have seen him or Brella around their hometown of Corby, Northamptonshire, during the days leading up to her death. Authorities have released CCTV footage showing the couple walking together near Corby Boasting Lake, which could potentially provide leads for the investigation.

Returning to the family, they have been devastated by the loss of Brella. A tribute from her family emphasized the impact her absence has created: “Harshita, you left this world but you are still with us in our hearts and will always be there. We will never forget you till our last breath. Always stay with us. We miss you at every moment of our lives.” Such sentiments ring deeply as they signify the lasting pain left behind by her tragic fate.

This situation has put the spotlight back on Northamptonshire Police, who are already under scrutiny for their handling of domestic abuse cases. The circumstances of Brella’s murder have sparked indications of systemic failures, which led IOPC to open inquiries to determine if police procedures surrounding her previous reports of abuse were followed correctly. The recent trend reflects growing criticism of police responses to domestic violence incidents—an issue critically underscored by the serious consequences of disregarding such reports.

Assistant Chief Constable Emma James stated, “Our thoughts are with Ms. Brella’s family and all those affected by her death. We have always taken domestic violence seriously, and this case has highlighted ways we can improve our service.” This acknowledgment of shortcomings emphasizes the need for law enforcement to listen more attentively to victims, creating viable pathways for them to escape dangerous situations.

Domestic abuse remains one of society's most pressing challenges, impacting countless victims across the globe. This is evidenced by the growing number of reports and increasing awareness from various organizations aimed at providing support and resources to victims. Sadly, the consequences are sometimes fatal, raising alarm over the fate of those crying out for help.

The IOPC has also indicated their investigation will probe how past interactions between Brella and law enforcement were managed, taking steps to identify key improvements needed moving forward. The systemic nature of these issues signals to communities everywhere the importance of recognizing the signs of domestic violence and acting before it escalates.

It remains to be seen how law enforcement will rectify noted deficiencies, but the tragic story of Harshita Brella exemplifies the dire need for immediate and decisive action to protect vulnerable individuals. Victims of domestic abuse deserve proactive measures, not dismissiveness—there can be no more room for complacency if lives are to be genuinely safeguarded.

Brella’s family is left grappling with their loss. They urge the authorities not to turn their backs on similar cases, pushing for reforms aimed at preventing future tragedies. It’s not just about justice for Harshita Brella; it’s about ensuring every victim of domestic abuse receives the help they require.

For now, the case continues to evolve, with public interest fostering hopes for justice, not only for Brella but also for all victims of domestic violence who struggle under oppressive circumstances. Community awareness and support play pivotal roles in changing the narrative so victims are no longer silenced and their needs addressed accordingly.
