WALLINGFORD — Hundreds of police officers arrived at the Toyota Oakdale Theatre in Wallingford Wednesday afternoon to pay their respects to Yale Officer Gregory Swiantek, who died while on duty last week. The attendance was a testament to his service and the impact he had on those around him.
Officer Gregory Swiantek, 47, unexpectedly passed away from what is believed to be a major heart attack after responding to several high-stress calls throughout his shift on March 12, 2025. His death was formally recognized as a line-of-duty incident, as he experienced health issues while managing the demands of the job.
Having served the Yale University Police Department for 17 years, Swiantek held various positions, including community engagement officer and bicycle officer. He was well-respected by colleagues and had a reputation for being humorous and good-natured. Swiantek's contributions went beyond typical police work; he embodied a spirit of community service.
During the ceremony, family members shared touching memories of his passion for music and the strong bond he shared with his 10-year-old daughter, Remy. Swiantek was not just a dedicated officer but also a devoted father who taught her how to play guitar and sing. The emotional weight of his absence was palpable, especially as Remy expressed her feelings during the service.
While remembering her father, Remy said, “My dad pushed me every day to be better than I was the day before. Whether that was through my music, my work on the soccer field or just being a better person. I have been missing him very much. He was my whole world, and I knew I was his. All I shared, I shared every day with my dad and all the amazing things I’ve watched him do will live on through my memories.” Her heartfelt remarks brought about a standing ovation from those in attendance.
Following her speech, attendees were further moved by live music: Swiantek’s uncle and cousin performed “Summer, Highland Falls” by Billy Joel, a song cherished by the late officer.
Swiantek’s legacy was also honored with ceremonial presentations during the memorial service. As a special tribute, Remy was gifted concert tickets from her father, which he had requested for their upcoming outings. Additionally, she received a ceremonial flag and a medal in honor of Swiantek’s service, signifying not just the loss but also the pride of his contributions.
The funeral was attended by hundreds of first responders from across Connecticut. Officers and citizens alike joined together, recognizing Swiantek’s dedication to public service. “Whether he was in his police uniform or his volunteer firefighter uniform or whether he was in his shorts with a fishing pole with his daughter, he was a superhero,” said Ronnell Higgins, Commissioner of the Connecticut Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection.
His colleagues and friends at the department remembered him as a tireless public servant who always treated others with respect. This sentiment was reiterated by Yale Police Chief Anthony Campbell, who stated, “When you hear someone say, he would give you the shirt off his back, he would do anything… he literally would.”
Higgins further illustrated Swiantek’s character during his remarks, noting, “Greg was a man who was courageous, selfless, ethical, and professional. He devoted all of his energy to his amazing daughter, Remy, his fellow officers, and the Yale and New Haven communities that he served so well.”
The proceedings at the service concluded with a helicopter flyover—a solemn salute acknowledging Swiantek's service to the community he loved. Moreover, Yale Dispatcher Anthony Notarino delivered the last call for Swiantek’s badge number, 404, marking a poignant end to his watch. “Officer Swiantek is the example of what an officer should be. This is the end of watch for our brother, Officer Gregory Swiantek badge 404,” Notarino said. “Rest in peace. We will take it from here.”
