Hundreds Gather To Honor Oleg Strizhenov At His Funeral

Family and friends celebrate the legacy of the beloved actor and director at Troekurovsky Cemetery.

On February 12, 2023, the Russian artistic community turned out to bid farewell to one of its greatest legends, Oleg Strizhenov, who passed away at the age of 95 on February 9. Strizhenov, known for his remarkable contributions to theater and cinema, was laid to rest at Troekurovsky Cemetery after a heartfelt memorial service held at the Church of St. Nicholas on the Three Mountains.

Strizhenov's family opted for a simpler farewell rather than a traditional civil funeral at the theater. His son, Alexander Strizhenov, described how his father had made clear his wish not to be displayed lying on stage, saying, "He wanted to play on stage, not lie on it." Instead, the intimate ceremony gathered family, close friends, and notable figures from the film and television industry.

During the service, many attendees carried flowers and wreaths, representing their love and admiration for the beloved actor. This included tributes from the President of Russia and the Union of Cinematographers. Alexander recalled the poignant last moments with his father, sharing, "Open the front door, my mother is coming," referring to Strizhenov's final wish, reflecting both grief and serenity.

The ceremony was attended by several prominent personalities from the arts, including television hosts Elena Malysheva, Larisa Guzeyeva, and Leonid Yakubovich. Malysheva eulogized Strizhenov, stating, "He was the greatest actor of Russia and of incredible male beauty," and recounted her memories of his unforgettable role from the film "Sorrowful Peter" from her childhood.

The funeral was marked with emotional farewells filled with memories and stories. Alexander Strizhenov shared how his father inspired him throughout his life, mentioning, "He followed everything we did... he said to me recently, 'I am proud of what you do,'" continuing to highlight Oleg's genuine support.

After the memorial service, the group made their way to Troekurovsky Cemetery, where Strizhenov was laid to rest surrounded by the grave markers of other prominent figures, including actress Anastasia Zavorotnyuk and artists of equal stature. The service was deeply emotional, with family and friends gathered around the grave sharing their own stories about Oleg's impact and legacy.

Alexander reflected on his father's warmth, expressing how secure he felt as a child, recalling, "I turned over on my inflatable mattress... but I knew my father was there, and his arms reached out to pull me from the water,” encapsulating the love and protection he felt. This reminiscence painted the picture of Strizhenov not just as a star, but as the caring father who shaped personal memories.

The gathering was filled with shared laughter and tears as attendees offered final words of respect and gratitude. To many, Oleg Strizhenov was not just another actor but rather, a symbol of the golden age of Russian cinema. Alexander emphasized the indelible mark his father left on his life stating, “He raised the bar for all of us,” urging those he inspired to continue striving for excellence.

Despite the sadness of the day, the essence of Oleg Strizhenov's legacy was woven through every tribute, reflecting on his 30+ iconic roles across more than seven decades. His work has transcended generations, leaving behind stories, emotions, and the immeasurable impact on Russian art and culture.

With his passing, the industry mourns the loss of this monumental figure, but his rich legacy lives on through the memories shared by those he touched. Strizhenov’s influence resonates among both peers and aspiring actors, reminding them of the passion, artistry, and commitment he embodied throughout his prolific career.
