Humanitarian Crisis Deepens As Gaza Conflict Continues

International scrutiny on Israel intensifies amid ongoing violence and aid blockades

The ongoing conflict in the Gaza Strip has taken a severe toll on the humanitarian situation, prompting international scrutiny and criticism. As of May 8, 2025, the European Union is set to review its cooperation with Israel, particularly regarding adherence to human rights principles outlined in the Association Agreement. EU Foreign Affairs Representative Kaja Kallas indicated that foreign ministers will assess Israel's compliance in their upcoming meeting, with the Netherlands notably questioning Israel's commitment to these principles, especially following the halt of aid deliveries to Gaza since early March.

Compounding the crisis, the head of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), Philippe Lazzarini, condemned Israel's recent decision to permanently close six UNRWA schools in East Jerusalem. This closure, affecting nearly 800 children, was enforced by Israeli police who entered schools in the Shuafat refugee camp and ordered students and staff to vacate immediately. Lazzarini characterized this action as a "direct attack on children and education," adding that such moves are a blatant disregard for international law.

In the southern Gaza Strip, heavy fighting continues between Hamas fighters and Israeli soldiers, indicating that Hamas remains active in areas where the Israeli military has sought to establish control. Reports suggest that these clashes are intensifying, with the situation remaining volatile. Meanwhile, Israel has launched its most significant bombardments of targets in Lebanon since the ceasefire with Hezbollah last November, conducting dozens of airstrikes in southern Lebanon, which resulted in at least one death and eight injuries.

The humanitarian crisis in Gaza has reached alarming levels as the World Central Kitchen, a U.S.-based aid organization, announced it can no longer provide meals due to the Israeli blockade of humanitarian aid. Previously, the organization had distributed over 130,000 meals daily and baked 80,000 loaves of bread, but now, due to empty stock and lack of supplies, it has been forced to close its community kitchens. José Andrés, the founder of World Central Kitchen, expressed the dire situation, stating, "Our trucks loaded with food and supplies are waiting in Egypt, Jordan, and Israel to enter Gaza," emphasizing the urgent need for humanitarian access.

Since March 2, 2025, Israel has blocked all aid deliveries into the Gaza Strip, where approximately two million Palestinians reside. The Israeli government accuses Hamas of intercepting aid and selling it to fund their operations, exacerbating the plight of civilians. The International Committee of the Red Cross has called for an immediate end to the "horror" unfolding in Gaza, as the situation continues to deteriorate.

In light of the ongoing violence, the Israeli national security council has issued warnings to citizens traveling to the Eurovision Song Contest (ESC) in Basel, Switzerland, citing potential protests that could escalate into violence. The council advised Israelis to avoid displaying Jewish or Israeli symbols and to refrain from discussing military service or the ongoing conflict while in Switzerland.

On the military front, Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Katz has issued a stern warning to the Houthi rebels in Yemen, threatening severe retaliation should they continue to launch attacks against Israel. This warning comes amid escalating tensions in the region, highlighting the broader implications of the conflict in Gaza.

As the conflict drags on, it has now lasted for 19 months since its escalation on October 7, 2023. The Israeli government has approved a plan for a significant expansion of military operations in Gaza, aiming to take control of the area permanently. This strategy includes relocating the Palestinian population to the southern part of the Gaza Strip and mobilizing tens of thousands of reservists to implement these measures. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has stated that while there are still at least 21 Israeli hostages believed to be alive in Gaza, there are concerns that three others, previously thought to be alive, may now be dead. Overall, 59 individuals are still held captive in the region.

The humanitarian impact of the conflict is profound, with reports indicating that many children are now alone and traumatized as they navigate the chaos of war. Organizations like SOS Children's Villages have reported an increase in the number of children left to fend for themselves, with many having lost one or both parents. Those still with families are facing severe psychological stress due to the ongoing violence and instability.

As the conflict continues, the situation in Gaza remains critical, with calls for urgent humanitarian intervention growing louder. The international community watches closely, aware that the ramifications of this prolonged conflict extend far beyond the immediate region, impacting global stability and security.
