Huawei Launches Pura X, A Bold New Foldable Smartphone

The device showcases a unique wide design with remarkable specs for multimedia users.

On March 20, 2025, Huawei Technologies Co. unveiled the Huawei Pura X, a remarkable addition to the foldable smartphone market, redefining the way users interact with mobile devices. This unique device combines a wide form factor with advanced features, offering users a pleasant experience for reading, gaming, or photography.

During a live event in Shenzhen, Huawei's consumer chief Richard Yu introduced the Pura X, emphasizing its innovative design, which stands out amidst an industry dominated by traditional flip and foldable devices. "The wider design is more practical, providing more screen real estate for users," Yu remarked, highlighting its new 16:10 aspect ratio. The Pura X features a 6.3-inch OLED main display with a resolution of 2120×1320 pixels and a 3.5-inch cover screen boasting a resolution of 980×980 pixels.

Both the internal and external displays support a 1-120Hz adaptive refresh rate and maximum brightness levels reaching up to 2500 nits, ensuring visibility in various lighting conditions. The device is designed to cater especially to content consumption, providing an increase in viewable area compared to traditional smartphones.

Constructed with a focus on durability, the Pura X has received an IPX8 water resistance rating, promising to withstand submersion in up to 2 meters of water. Weighing in at 193.7g for the leather version and 195.9g for the glass back version, this foldable phone combines robust features with a lightweight feel.

The Pura X is equipped with an advanced camera system featuring a quad-camera array. The setup includes a 50MP main camera with optical image stabilization (OIS), a 40MP ultra-wide macro lens, and an 8MP telephoto lens with 3.5x optical zoom. A dedicated color sensor rounds out the camera suite, while a 10.7MP selfie camera is integrated into the internal display. This comprehensive camera functionality allows users to capture high-quality images and videos, further enhanced by Huawei's advanced algorithms.

In terms of connectivity, the Pura X supports Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.2, and NFC, with the collector's edition offering satellite communication capabilities, broadening its appeal for avid travelers. Powering the device is a 4,720mAh battery, which supports both 66W fast wired and 40W wireless charging, reducing downtime for users constantly on the go.

The device operates on HarmonyOS 5.0.1, Huawei's in-house operating system, which features AI integration through Huawei’s Pangu large model and DeepSeek technology. This includes innovative functions like page-turning through eye movement — a notable advancement in user interactivity that sets the Pura X apart from other smartphones.

Costing upwards of CNY 7,499 (approximately $1000), the Pura X's pricing reflects its premium nature. The various models include options such as 12GB RAM with 256GB storage for CNY 7,499 or 12GB RAM with 512GB storage for CNY 7,999. The higher-end configurations reach CNY 9,999 (around $1,500) for the collector's edition with 16GB RAM and 1TB storage. These prices indicate Huawei's strategic positioning in the competitive smartphone market, targeting tech-savvy consumers eager for innovative features.

As Huawei continues to enhance its offerings, the Pura X represents bold innovation while moving away from dependency on traditional operating systems like Android. This pivot enhances Huawei’s independence and showcases their commitment to developing unique user experiences.

The Pura X is now available exclusively in China, marking the latest step in Huawei’s efforts to redefine the foldable smartphone experience. Considering the unique design and features, the Pura X could become a game-changer in how mobile technology is utilized, especially for content creators and media consumers.

In conclusion, the Huawei Pura X not only improves upon existing designs but also introduces features that cater to the modern user. As the smartphone landscape evolves, it will be fascinating to observe how this device performs against competitors like Samsung's Galaxy Z Flip series, reinforcing Huawei's place at the forefront of mobile innovation.
