Hoy No Circula Restrictions In Mexico City On May 9

Vehicles with specific plates and stickers must stay off the roads to combat pollution.

On Friday, May 9, 2025, the Hoy No Circula program is in effect across the Metropolitan Zone of the Valley of Mexico, which includes Mexico City (CDMX) and the State of Mexico (Edomex). This initiative aims to combat pollution by restricting certain vehicles from circulating on the roads. If you own a vehicle, it’s crucial to check the restrictions for the day to avoid penalties from authorities.

Under the current regulations, vehicles with blue stickers and license plates ending in 9 and 0, as well as those with holograms 1 and 2, are prohibited from circulating. This restriction applies from 5:00 AM to 10:00 PM. The program is active in all 16 boroughs of Mexico City and 18 municipalities in the State of Mexico, including areas like Atizapán de Zaragoza, Ecatepec, and Naucalpan.

Exceptions to the Hoy No Circula program include vehicles with hologram 0 and 00, electric and hybrid cars, public transportation vehicles, taxis, motorcycles, emergency vehicles, and service vehicles. These vehicles are allowed to circulate freely during the restricted hours.

Interestingly, there will not be a double Hoy No Circula on this date, despite concerns about air quality. Reports indicate that the air quality was deemed acceptable on Thursday, May 8, 2025, meaning the Commission for Environmental Cooperation (CAMe) did not declare an environmental contingency.

For those wondering about the penalties for non-compliance, fines can range from 2,262.80 to 3,394.20 pesos, corresponding to 20 to 30 Units of Measurement and Update (UMA). The UMA value for 2025 is set at 113.14 pesos, making it essential for drivers to comply with these regulations to avoid financial repercussions.

The Hoy No Circula program is designed to reduce pollution levels in the Valley of Mexico, a region that often suffers from poor air quality. This initiative is part of broader efforts to improve environmental health in urban areas.

As the day progresses, drivers are advised to stay updated on any changes regarding the air quality and the potential for a double Hoy No Circula, which could affect a larger number of vehicles if the air quality deteriorates. The CAMe monitors air quality closely, and if pollution levels exceed acceptable limits, they may activate additional restrictions.

In summary, on May 9, 2025, vehicles with blue stickers and license plates ending in 9 and 0, along with those with holograms 1 and 2, must remain parked. However, electric vehicles, those with certain exemptions, and public transport can circulate freely. Drivers should remain vigilant and informed about the regulations to ensure compliance and contribute to the ongoing efforts to improve air quality in the region.
