Hoy No Circula Restrictions Applied This Saturday In Mexico City

Motorists in Mexico City must check if their vehicles are allowed on the road amid ongoing air quality concerns.

As the weekend approaches in Mexico, the importance of adhering to the Hoy No Circula program becomes especially relevant for drivers in the megalopolis, encompassing both Mexico City and the State of Mexico. On Saturday, March 22, 2025, specific restrictions will apply to vehicles in these regions to combat air pollution.

The Hoy No Circula initiative is enforced by the Comisión Ambiental de la Megalópolis (CAMe), aiming to reduce emissions from vehicles during times of increased pollution. This is particularly necessary as this period falls within the ozone season when air quality can decline significantly.

On this date, vehicles displaying a hologram 1 with license plates ending in an even number—specifically 0, 2, 4, 6, and 8—will not be allowed to circulate. Additionally, all vehicles with a hologram 2 and those with foreign license plates are banned from the roads. This is all part of the continuing effort to improve air quality standards in the region.

Fortunately, there are several categories of vehicles exempt from these restrictions. This includes cars displaying hologram 0 or 00, which can circulate freely without any limitations. Also, vehicles with hologram 1 that have license plates ending in an odd number (1, 3, 5, 7, and 9), and motorcycles as well as taxis, are permitted to circulate without issues.

The restrictions are active from 5:00 AM to 10:00 PM on March 22, 2025, and motorists must ensure they comply to avoid penalties. Violators could face fines ranging from 20 to 30 UMAs, translating to approximately 3,394 pesos, highlighting the seriousness of adherence to these rules.

The situation surrounding air quality in Mexico City and the wider megalopolis is concerning. As air pollution continues to rise, sensitive groups are being urged to take precautions. The Índice de Aire y Salud has indicated that the air quality is being monitored closely, with some regions experiencing 'bad' air quality—namely in areas such as Tláhuac and Naucalpan while others report acceptable levels.

Interestingly, the Doble Hoy No Circula, which would impose more stringent restrictions, was briefly activated due to a Phase 1 Environmental Contingency for ozone on March 19. However, this was lifted the same day, and as of now, no further imposition of Doble Hoy No Circula has been announced. Thus, the standard Hoy No Circula restrictions will apply.

Motorists, therefore, are advised to remain vigilant and check the relevant information to ensure compliance, as environmental conditions can rapidly change and further restrictions could be imposed suddenly.

The overall aim of the Hoy No Circula initiative is to minimize pollution by ensuring that the most polluting vehicles spend less time on the road, thereby improving the overall air quality for all residents of Mexico City and the State of Mexico. Observing vehicle restrictions based on emission ratings and license plate numbers is a key aspect of this environmental strategy.

This is crucial not only for immediate health benefits but also for the long-term sustainability of urban life in a bustling megacity. It’s a collective effort that requires the cooperation of every resident who drives as pollution not only affects individual health but the wider community as a whole.

Looking ahead, it is important for drivers to know what restrictions are in place and the consequences of non-compliance. The Hoy No Circula program is emblematic of a larger trend in urban areas aiming for cleaner air and healthier living conditions.

In summary, on March 22, 2025, vehicle operation restrictions will not only be a legal obligation but a common step toward improving the air breathed by countless citizens. By adhering to the regulations of the Hoy No Circula program, drivers can collectively contribute to reducing pollution and enhancing the quality of life in their local environment.
