Howard Carpendale Opens Up About Depression And Son Wayne's Support

The Schlager star reflects on his struggles and the pivotal role of family during tough times.

Howard Carpendale, the acclaimed Schlager singer, has opened up about his struggles with depression and the substantial role his son Wayne has played during his darkest times. Known for hits like "Hello Again" and "Ti Amo," Carpendale's career has spanned decades, but it was not without personal challenges.

After announcing his retirement from public life back in 2003, Carpendale faced severe consequences, slipping deep down the rabbit hole of depression. This period marked a significant turning point for him, and during a recent interview on WDR's show "Kölner Treff," he candidly discussed how Wayne's unexpected visit during Christmas was instrumental to his recovery.

This simple yet powerful gesture by Wayne—who had just started dating—left a deep impact on Carpendale, who recognized the sacrifices his son made to be there for him during such challenging times.

Reflecting on his son's unwavering support, Carpendale expressed gratitude: "Diese Familie ist schon ein Geschenk für mich, wirklich." His acknowledgment of family’s significance highlights the bond they share and how it has been his anchor through trying periods.

Yet, during the discussion, Carpendale also revealed feelings of inadequacy as a father, stating, "Ich habe mich oft gefragt, ob ich es genauso getan hätte für dich." This unexpected admission prompted light laughter from the audience yet underscored his vulnerability. Wayne, now 47, took the comment lightly, mentioning, "Es wird auch oft auf meine Fahne geschrieben, aber wir sind eine Familie, wir halten zusammen, wir reden miteinander."

Wayne expressed his admiration for how he and Howard maintained their close relationship, emphasizing, "Außer diese zwei Stunden auf der Bühne konnte ich und kann ich ihn immer erreichen." Despite the intense pressure of Howard's career, Wayne believed his father made efforts to be present, stating, "Aber er hat mich wahrgenommen, hat mich ernst genommen." Their bond, forged through these experiences, is one of deep respect and friendship, transcending traditional father-son dynamics.

At 78, Howard possesses wisdom shaped by fame, family, and his own misgivings. He openly admitted feelings of guilt, lamenting, “Wie Wayne als Vater ist. Wayne ist ein zehnmal besserer Vater, als ich es jemals war. Das gebe ich gerne zu.” His self-reflection on parenting struck at the core of their familial interactions and highlighted the legacy he constantly evaluates.

The love and support within the Carpendale family suggest authenticity and resilience. Their interactions reveal how challenging moments can also become pivotal to strengthening relationships. Wayne stated, "Wir sind, in unserem Umgang miteinander, irgendwie wie zwei Brüder," emblematic of the bond they now share—less about traditional hierarchies and more about mutual respect and camaraderie.

This insight came forth during the discussion about the documentary “Durch meine Augen – Mein Vater Howard Carpendale,” which chronicles Howard's life, struggles with depression, and eventual support from Wayne. With the WDR airing the heartfelt documentary on December 14, 2024, audiences will gain insights not only about Howard the singer but Howard the father and how these dual roles have intertwined through family trials.

Howard’s evolution from the spotlight to grappling with mental health issues has been informed significantly by his son’s support, allowing both to mature together and redefining their family’s narrative. Their story acts as both cautionary and encouraging; enlightening the notion of carving out family time amid personal upheavals.

The closeness and love shared between Howard and Wayne illuminate the complex layers of their lives—a public persona cloaked with personal battles, intertwined destinies, and the unmistakable strength of family ties. Their candid admissions are more than just revelations; they are testaments to the power of resilience through connection, heartwarming lessons for all about facing life's adversities together.
