How To Differentiate Between Cold And Flu Symptoms

Flu cases rise 350% this year, highlighting importance of vaccination.

Winter is upon us, and with it, the yearly rise of colds and influenza cases. This year's flu season brings alarmingly high rates, with reports indicating a staggering 350% increase in flu cases compared to the same time last year. The rise has prompted health experts to urge the public, particularly at-risk groups, to book their flu vaccinations immediately.

Speaking on BBC Morning Live, regular GP Dr. Xand van Tulleken clarified the distinct differences between colds and the flu, offering valuable insight to viewers. He emphasizes one key point: "The cold will come on a little bit more slowly and typically, it's upper respiratory tract. You may have a very sore throat with lots of snot and nasal congestion. But flu will drop you like a sack of bricks."

Dr. Xand notes how, unlike the common cold, which is manageable to some extent, the flu can be significantly debilitating and even life-threatening. "A cold you can keep functioning through; it's miserable, it’s no fun, but flu can hospitalize you and cause major problems," he adds. The symptoms associated with the flu often hit fast and hard, classifying it as what he refers to as "a whole systemic illness."

Among the severe symptoms of the flu are muscle pains, exhaustion, and extreme weakness. Dr. Xand warns, "Flu tends to come quickly, and you might experience severe muscle soreness, weakness, exhaustion, and even confusion. It can exacerbate many existing health conditions." This stark distinction serves as a reminder for the public to remain vigilant.

But just how dangerous can the flu be? Dr. Xand doesn't mince words: "You can reduce your risk of hospitalization substantially. The first thing is when you’re thinking about pneumonia; you don’t want to be in bed and let your lungs shut down." He discusses how both breathing exercises and regular movement can help mitigate some risks associated with the flu.

"Literally opening your chest alters the risk of getting severe chest infections. It doesn’t reduce it to nothing, but it makes a big difference. The same thing with movement. By doing stretches, you keep your muscles active, which will also reduce your chance of getting blood clots and DVT," he explains, advocating for simple but effective preventive measures.

Dr. Xand also pointed out the current challenges posed by what is being termed the "quad-demic" — the simultaneous spread of four respiratory viruses, including influenza. "It’s putting a huge burden on the NHS," he notes, reflecting on the potentially dangerous rise of flu cases amid lower-than-average uptake of flu vaccines. "You only need a few more vulnerable people and slightly less vaccine uptake, and suddenly the opportunity for this virus spread increases."

The warning signs are clear. With flu cases on the rise and the potential for overwhelming health systems, the call to action is urgent: citizens are encouraged to book their free NHS flu vaccinations to safeguard not only their health but also the health of the community.

The key takeaway, as underscored by Dr. Xand, is the necessity of recognizing these symptoms correctly. Knowing the differences between the flu and cold can lead to appropriate care and healthier choices. While both conditions can cause discomfort, the flu can lead to severe consequences. Therefore, being proactive about preventative care could spell the difference between illness and wellness this winter season.
