The hospitality scene in Sarria has just received a significant upgrade, as the Hotel Alfonso IX unveils its newly renovated facilities, marking the end of extensive renovations begun back in 2022. With over 600,000 euros spent on improvements to all 60 guest rooms, the hotel is set to become even more appealing to clientele as it gears up for the upcoming Holy Year 2027.
The hotel, which first opened its doors back in 1993, has been closed for nearly two months to undertake the final phase of the renovations, which affected the layout and design of the first-floor rooms. On March 1, 2025, the hotel reopened its doors after completing significant updates to both guest rooms and bathrooms. “The renovation includes wardrobes, headboards, desks, electrical installations, and soundproofing,” noted representatives from Ponte Ribeira SL, the company spearheading the project.
The renovations addressed not just aesthetic aspects but also practical improvements, ensuring guests enjoy modern comforts during their stay. This year’s renovation effort focused on enhancing features and establishing updated standards, with plans underway to cover the rooftop terrace by 2026, transforming it to serve appetizers during midday events.
Alongside physical improvements, there are also plans to install solar panels on the roof, which could save the hotel around 19 percent on energy costs, ensuring both sustainability and cost-effectiveness. Given the financial investment and aspirations for the future, the hotel management harbors optimistic expectations for the upcoming seasons.
Last year, the Hotel Alfonso IX welcomed 19,000 guests, resulting in 11,000 room bookings. Looking forward, the hotel has already secured over 80 percent of its reservations for the month of April, with forecasting for full occupancy by May. While the busy summer months of July and August traditionally see last-minute bookings, projections suggest they will also not lack inquiries.
The location attracts diverse clients, ranging from pilgrims visiting the nearby Camino de Santiago to tourists and locals returning home for vacations. This year, as the hotel prepares to host the annual hospitality gala on March 10, 2025, they're also recruiting staff to bolster their team. Currently, they are seeking kitchen staff, waiters, and room cleaning personnel to support their upcoming busy period.
Meanwhile, the Sarria community celebrated another significant milestone, acknowledging the long years of dedication from members like Raimundo González, the oldest member of Sociedad Deportiva Sarriana. At 87, González has devoted more than half his life—over 55 years—supporting the local football club. The club plans to honor him with the honorary kick-off during its match against Estradense, scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at Municipal Field A Ribela.
González, whose story began when he enrolled as a club member back in 1970, recalls, "I have always liked supporting sports." His contributions extend beyond mere attendance; he has sponsored various local initiatives, including exhibitions and funding for the nursing home project. Notably, he served as the director of Caixa Galicia until his retirement, becoming deeply intertwined with the community and sports clubs.
After studying at the Escolapios school, González stepped onto the football field for the first time. Reflecting on those early days, he stated, "I was very bad; I kicked the ball and nothing else." Throughout the decades, he has seen the ups and downs of the club, now joyfully monitoring its rise to the Segunda RFEF level. Discussing the transformation, he asserts, "Today I see Sarria with very favorable eyes."
The upcoming match will not only celebrate the club's spirit but also recognize the countless contributions of individuals like González, who embody the heart and soul of local football. The players from both competing teams will form lines to applaud him, acknowledging his 55 years of unwavering commitment and support for their endeavors.
