Hong Kong Welcomes 680,000 Tourists During Lunar New Year

The city sees increased mainland visitors and international tourists, marking growth for its tourism sector.

The festive spirit welcomed 680,000 tourists to Hong Kong over the first four days of the Lunar New Year celebrations, reflecting significant optimism for the city’s tourism sector. This figure, revealed by the Hong Kong Tourism Board, marks a 6% increase from the same period last year, with notable rises particularly evident among international visitors.

Dane Cheng Ting-yat, the executive director of the Hong Kong Tourism Board, noted the encouraging figures during his appearance on a local radio show. He highlighted the influx of 564,000 visitors from mainland China, which is up by 4% compared to the previous year. The overall surge included 114,000 international tourists, contributing to this upbeat trend.

Cheng expressed hope for continued growth as mainland travelers, currently enjoying their eight-day Spring Festival holiday, were expected to start exploring Hong Kong from the third and fourth days of the celebrations. He pointed out, “Normally, mainlanders will head back to their hometowns for Lunar New Year celebrations before they start traveling around.” This traffic is set against the backdrop of other regional destinations like South Korea also enjoying the holiday.

The revelry didn’t just attract travelers from the mainland; the vibrant atmosphere around the Lunar New Year festivities evidently captured the attention of visitors from various parts of the globe. Many hotels reported full bookings as attendees flocked to Hong Kong for mega-events and to soak up the celebratory ambiance.

Offering more than just seasonal festivities, Hong Kong has lined up numerous attractions scheduled for the coming months. Among these are the Hong Kong Marathon, the Hong Kong Rugby Sevens, and the prestigious Basel Art Exhibition, all expected to bring more tourists to the city.

Cheng elaborated on the development of the newly established Kai Tak Sports Park, which he anticipates will significantly boost the city’s appeal to tourists. He explained how these events, combined with the festive mood of the Lunar New Year, serve as powerful magnets for both local and international visitors alike.

To attract visitors from the Middle East, Cheng also mentioned initiatives to make Hong Kong more hospitable for Muslim travelers. This includes dozens of hotels and restaurants obtaining Halal certification. While current numbers of Middle Eastern tourists remain low, Cheng expressed confidence: “Although the number of Middle Eastern tourists is not large, the industry believes… Muslim travelers will come to Hong Kong during long journeys.”

The overarching sentiment within the tourism sector is one of cautious optimism. With the Lunar New Year festivities marking the beginning of what is hoped will be a thriving year for tourism, industry leaders remain focused on not just maintaining but building upon these gains by continuously enhancing the travel experience through diverse offerings and cultural events.

All signs point toward a prosperous future as Hong Kong enhances its appeal through festive celebrations and strategic tourism initiatives aimed at broadening its visitor demographic. With the backdrop of vibrant traditions and strategic developments, the city’s tourism narrative continues to evolve, showcasing its resilience and capacity to attract global attention.
