The high-speed rail link from Hong Kong to Western Anhui officially opened on January 5, 2024, with the inaugural train departing at 9:07 AM from the West Kowloon Station and extending to the north station of Xi'an. With train journeys now available to several significant new stations — including Meizhou West, Suzhou South, and Xintang at Guangzhou’s new development area — the rail line strengthens Hong Kong’s connections with the economically and culturally rich regions of mainland China.
During the celebratory ceremony held early this morning at the West Kowloon Station, high-ranking officials and representatives from the rail and tourism sectors gathered to witness this historic event. Key figures included MTR Corporation’s Executive Director of Hong Kong Passenger Services, Ms. Yang Meizhen, and the Director General of the Hong Kong Tourism Board, Mr. Cheng Dingyi, alongside guests from Shaanxi Province.
Ms. Yang highlighted the importance of this new direct train service to Xi’an, emphasizing, "This connection signifies closer ties between Hong Kong and the northwestern regions of mainland China," and it will facilitate both leisure and business travel for individuals coming from the mainland to Hong Kong.
The first train on this route, designated G826/7, takes approximately 10 hours and 54 minutes, making stops at 15 locations, including major hubs such as Guangzhou South, Changsha South, and Wuhan. The arrival time is scheduled for 8:01 PM, providing travelers with ample time to explore Xi'an's rich historical offerings after arrival.
The official launch of the high-speed rail service also included cultural performances celebrating Shaanxi traditions, bringing elements of local culture to the forefront. Visitors to the station were treated to dance performances and were offered cookies featuring iconic symbols of Xi'an — ensuring they felt the vibrant connection to their destination even before boarding their train.
Following the upgrade of high-speed rail services from Hong Kong, now more than 90 direct stations can be accessed, and train frequency has increased significantly from 100 pairs to around 108 pairs on busy days. This increase reflects the growing demand from passengers eager to travel between these two regions.
Legislative Council member and travel industry representative, Mr. Yao Boliang, commented on the enhancement of travel routes, noting how the increased connectivity would benefit tourism and facilitate commerce between the regions. "With more direct connections now available, we can encourage Hong Kong residents to travel to the mainland for vacation or business, whilst attracting larger numbers of mainland visitors to our city," he stated.
The return service from Xi'an North back to West Kowloon is anticipated to be just as efficient, departing at 11:04 AM and arriving back at 9:09 PM, promoting swift travel options for both residents and visitors. Many passengers enjoyed the new high-speed experience, stating, "Traveling by high-speed rail is considerably more comfortable than flying, and I appreciate the direct link from Hong Kong to Xi'an. It makes exploration much easier than before!"
Travel agents are now gearing up for additional arrangements prompted by this newly opened route, indicating several new travel packages to Xi'an for those interested. The expectation is for this rail line to boost visitor numbers substantially and provide unforgettable experiences to travelers.
Moving forward, the push will continue for the establishment of sleeper trains on longer routes, enhancing overnight travel options.
